I recently built a machine using a Pentium D
thought I could live with a D 820. but I am not at all impressed.
My TL 50 X2 laptop is faster.

The Specs are:

ASUS P5PE-VM 865G based board bios supports C2D.
2 gig ddr 400 2 dimms dual channel
7800GS AGP
250GIG SATA WD
250GIG PATA WD
SAMSUNG 16X PATA DVD BURNER
Antec Truepower 480
Winxp Pro Sp2
Mostly I use the machine for encoding iso to Divx
and burn DVDs from Hauppage PVR 250
I do play games occcasionally Prey, ultimate alliance D3. ETC
I am thinking of a E4300. due to the 800 FSB of this board.
Am I looking at a great deal of better perfomance or just a bump?

a bump, your board has a 200MHz FSB quad pumped makes 800MHz.

a 4300 at 9x 200 is 1.8GHz right at spec. Unless overclocked and I dont think your board allows you to adjust the FSB ? You not going to see a lot of improvement. You will get some. c2d are good at encoding.
