Hi guys on my profile is my laptop so ill put my desktop specs below. WIll the BFG 650W PSU be enough for GTX 460? ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817702003&cm_re=bfg_650-_-17-702-003-_-Product)

+3.3V@30A,+5V@54A,+12V1@20A,+12V2@20A,-12V@0.8A,+5VSB@2.5A

I checked on EVGA 460 (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amps.) http://www.evga.com/products/morein...ow=specs&family=GeForce 400 Series Family&sw=

So my power supply has 2 12v@20A...which i beleive adds up to 40A.
EVGA Card needs 12V@24A....is that just one or 2?... like would i need 48A PSU???:confused:

Motherboard: Intel D975XBX2
CPU: e6600 (UPGRADING TO Q9300 WITH THE VIDEO CARD)
GPU: MSI 8800 GTS 512
PSU: BFG 650W

anything else please let me know...hopefully my system wont explode if i upgrade.

Yes it's fine. GTX 460 can't even pull 17A at max load. NV just recommends a bigger PSU to account for people with crappy PSUs that grossly overstate their reliable maximum wattage and amps. Your PSU is not crappy.
 
Thank you for the quick reply, i didnt think i needed a better power supply either, good thing i thought ahead like 2 years ago and bought a good one.

So yes your PSU is crappy. But at least it's not shitty. Which mean that you don't need to replace the PSU unless you're planning on overclocking that Q9300 or adding more hard drives. It won't kill your PC when it dies either apparently.

That's a great PSU but you are okay with yours right now, even with 9300 oc. Just don't push it too hard, the Jonnyguru review said it falters a bit when you push to max. You are nowhere near 650W load even with oc'd CPU and GPU. Your total power draw at max load would still be sub-450W (probably more like the 380W that jonnyguru has on the table, which is 11.75V so that's not too terrible of a drop) if you have fairly typical periphrals, HDD, RAM, etc.

Still, PSUs last a long time so it's nuts to skimp on them. Especially since if they malfunction they can wreck your entire system and maybe even fry your HDD's PCB which makes it hard to extract photos/videos/etc. So plan on upgrading your PSU at some point. You don't have to upgrade it immediately though.
 
Well the thing is that its either upgrading the pc now for less than $500, or getting a new one for $1500.... but i will need a better one in a year and half. So im thinking just upgrading the one i got now. Ill probably push the cpu to 2.8 if anything, not too much. The gpu already is overclocked so im not gona touch anything there. But thanks everyone for helping me out with this one and saving me time and money. If anyone has something else to add i would really appreciate it.
