Well ... I got bored this week ... still waiting on my QX9770 / X48 to be released ..

I purchased:
2 Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme
4 Scythe S-FLEX (SFF21D) Fans

Current Setup

Q6600 @ 3.0
Artic Freezer 7

Temps around 70C at full load (1 SMP Linux)

Hoping to lower that and bump the OC up a little...

Also hoping to get my shuttle boxen and my new q6600 this week

I believe you will love those coolers. My favorite part is they cool well and those new fans are about dead silient.

Funny thing is when you put your hand behind the exhaust fans you are moving SOOO much air it doesn't even feel warm, but it is wisking heat away.

I own 3 TRUE's and they kick the piss out of the Zalman 9500

 
Evil, question where did u buy the ultra 120? I've been looking around and most commonly used places don't have it in stock, and I'm looking for a reputable place to buy it, any ideas ?



 
directron, jab-tech and other vendors like that have it.

 
Availability of TRUE is very good (here in EU) - some shops have more than 100 (because its very popular cooler) in stock:D.

 
Also if you have the materials, I suggest you lap the TRUE.. I was amazed at how uneven the true base was. You still get awesome temps, but most likely one core would be something like 45 where the other was 50 under full load. Instead when you lap them you will see the cores, if you did it right, within 1c. Took me about 15 minutes with 2000 grit wetndry paper.





 
I've just picked up 4x HR-01X Xeon heatsinks to replace the stock heatsinks.
Hopefully they fit with the side panel case fans on the inside.
If not I'll just move the fans to the outside of the panel .............. :p
Once I've finished building my quads, I'll try them out.

I definitely suggest lapping the Ultra 120 base. I snagged one for my main system to replace the EXOS I sold to someone else. At first, the temps were a lot higher than what the EXOS had done and I knew that was wrong as the system I previously had the EXOS on I put an Ultima90 on. That Ultima90 gave better temps than the EXOS.

After taking an hour to lap the Ultra 120 with 320, 600 and 1000 grit sandpaper, I had a mostly flat base (except for a portion that doesn't even touch the CPU anyway) and temps that were about 8C or so cooler than what my EXOS did. My Q6600@3.6 in my main system rarely goes above 55C with an ambient temp of 75F.

If the cooler will fit the motherboard and the case (if you're using a case) it's definitely worth the money if you're going to be doing a bit of overclocking.

I also ended up lapping the heatspreader on that Q6600 and as I figured, it was a waste of time since it was nice and flat. At least now it has a very shiny heatspreader. :)

Install on one of them on my q6600 @ 3.0Ghz.

Temps went from 70c at load -> now at 50C at full load ..

This thing is huge .. but awesome ....

Second one comes in today..so have a little more work ahead of me

No problem for the help. This is just old school stuff for some of us. I'm just glad I haven't forgotten how to lap heatsinks in my old age. :eek:
