I am interested in Alienware m17 R4 laptop. I heard that the M.2 SSD is user-upgradable.
Does anyone know whether Samsung 980 Pro SSD is compatible with the laptop?

should work fine. both are nvme m.2 and same size. you remove the 8 back screws and pry the base off.

I'm guessing that it's "only" running PCIe 3.0 on the M.2. The 980 Pro will work, but why spend extra for a PCIe 4.0 drive when you can't use it?

Good point. I will go for Samsung 970 evo plus instead.
