Upgrading Mobo+CPU, need mobo suggestions

Alright so I only want to put down about $400 on an upgrade
-Intel q6600 $194.99 newegg.com
-Asus Mobo, need suggestions, Sli? prob will buy a second 8800gt when they hit like $100 :)
-Ram? I got 2 GB of ddr2 800. Prob want to upgrade to 8 gb

So after the cpu that leaves about $205, willing to go a little over that for fair ram and such.
Yeah yeah i7 and all, I just want a build that will last me 2-3 years until the Intel i7 gets cheaper with its 3 channel ddr3 memory because that will probably cost a lot to pay for the ram and mobo and all.

Mobo/ram suggestions are greatly appreciated, also if you got and links to guides on overclocking a q6600 that'd be radical :p. I admit I am a nub at this stuff, and I know the q6600 is good for overclocking so even though I am a nub I should be able to push it to a bit over its stock if not fully overclocked :D.

Oh yeah, currently got a 600 watt SeaSonic psu
a Zotac 8800GT AMP edition
2 gb of super talent ram
Early duo core, a presler cpu or something 2-3 years old.
Gigabyte mobo, breaks my ethernet cables, bout 2-3 years old.

I plan on once upgrading, to D-BAN two of my hard drives, install Vista 64 bit or Windows XP 64 bit to get a fresh start on my hard drives.

Cannot recommend getting a SLI motherboard since none of the quality SLI motherboards fit into your budget. You definitely cannot get a quality SLI motherboard plus 4GB, let alone 8GB of RAM, for $200.

This is the only SLI motherboard that I can recommend in good conscious since it has the least amount of problems out of all of Nvidia's SLI chipset based motherboards:
eVGA 123-YW-E175-A nForce 750i FTW SLI Motherboard - $190

If you can find room in your budget, I recommend this set of DDR2 800 RAM:
G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 RAM - $80

Though if you plan to overclock, you will definitely need a 3rd party HSF:
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle HSF - $37 & Retention Bracket - $7

And you can find a used 8800GT in the For Sale/For Trade subforum for roughly $110 to $120.

Yeah you make a good point, I do hear about a lot of problems with gfx cards and all. I still hear a lot of love for Asus.

You are correct, it doesn't matter ;). The RAM will clock itself at whatever speed you set it to in the BIOS. The number next to it is the maximum speed the manufacturer guarantees it to be run at.

As for the board, I agree with Danny's recommendation. The eVGA 750i FTW is the only nVidia-based Intel board that I haven't seen any real issues with. I'm not a huge fan of going SLI with an Intel setup altogether, but since you already have an 8800GT it seems like the best option for you on the cheap.
 
It doesn't matter for the RAM. The mobo can support DDR2 1066 RAM but by no means requires it. DDR2 800 RAM will work just fine.

That Asus P5N-D is an all-right motherboard but a slight pain in the ass to OC. That's all I've seen about it.
 
Hmm, I see a lot of people supporting ATI these days. Should I get a cross fire-able motherboard and just upgrade to some cheap ATIs in a year? I assume they will support a single Nvidia card.

Suggestions?

That wouldn't be a bad option, as long as you're aware that you'll end up incurring a loss in the value of your current video card. However, Crossfire solutions on the Intel platform are generally slightly more hassle-free than SLI setups on nVidia chipsets. It's really down to whether you want to go SLI in the near future or wait a couple of months and just upgrade to something that will kick the crap out of 8800GT SLI but will end up costing you more money.
 
As I said,bout a year ^_^. I don't really require the top end gfx to play games, just as long as my games will run on medium to high quality :p

Well, in a year who knows what'll be out there. Honestly, if you plan on waiting that long, either ATI or nVidia could be the winning side at that time. However, if you're willing to stick with single-card solutions, I'd recommend an Intel-based board anyway just for the sake of reliability.

You might as well go with the P5Q Pro instead of the E. There isn't any real feature difference between the two and the Pro version is $30 cheaper. The other stuff looks good.

If you check back to my first post in this thread, I've already recommended RAM and a high quality HSF. Those are two very very solid choices.
 
I concur with Danny regarding the RAM and the heatsink. Another heatsink to look at would be the OCZ Vendetta 2.
