Why someone would prefer 4:3 (not square BTW) to 16:10? Well I do, and it is because the 4:3 has much more pixels and is nearly as wide as the "widescreen" anyway.
20.1" 4:3 is 1600x1200 or 1.94 Million Pixels.
20.1" 16:10 is 1680x1050 or 1.76 Million Pixels.
I simple prefer the bigger screen.
As far as aspects, Right now there is 5:4 (tallest), 4:3, and 16:10 (shortest) and I think 4:3 is the best compromise in aspect ratios.
Nothing against widescreen, but I won't give up 150 000 pixels of screen real estate to go widescreen. The minimum screen height I want is 1200 pixels high: I use 21" trinitrons at 1600x1200 right now.
Here is a scale array of 4 production monitors, I have turned on 4:3 material to show how much extra screen you get with 16:10, but try different materials as you use them. (most widescreen dvds are 2:35:1).

1: 20" 4:3 (What I have now.)
2: 23" 16:10 (smallest widescreen I want, note same height as 20" 4:3)
3: 20" 16:10 (note the height is only the same as a 17")
4: 17" 5:4 (for comparison)

Your post makes it sound like you will lose real estate if you go with WS.
