I want an LCD monitor and i cant decide if i want widescreen or not. Also i dont know where i could get the best deal on one of these monitors.

Widescreen is great. I can't see why someone, if they had the choice, would choose a square LCD over wide. The advantages of widescreen as I see it are, wider field of view for games/movies, great for MMOs where you need space for all the interface elements and more realstate for apps. Personally, I would never go back to the square.

The only downside is that you need a decent video card to run widescreen resolutions.

Places to shop:

You don't have much imagination if you can't figure why someone would prefer 4:3 (not square BTW) to 16:10? I prefer 4:3, and it is because the 4:3 has much more pixels and is nearly as wide as the "widescreen" anyway.

20.1" 4:3 is 1600x1200 or 1.94 Million Pixels.
20.1" 16:10 is 1680x1050 or 1.76 Million Pixels.

I simple prefer the bigger screen.

As far as aspects, Right now there is 5:4 (tallest), 4:3, and 16:10 (shortest) and I think 4:3 is the best compromise in aspect ratios.

Nothing against widescreen, but I won't give up 150 000 pixels of screen real estate to go widescreen. The minimum screen height I want is 1200 pixels high: I use 21" trinitrons at 1600x1200 right now.

Here is a scale array of 4 production monitors, I have turned on 4:3 material to show how much extra screen you get with 16:10, but try different materials as you use them. (most widescreen dvds are 2:35:1).

1: 20" 4:3 (What I have now.)
2: 23" 16:10 (smallest widescreen I want, note same height as 20" 4:3)
3: 20" 16:10 (note the height is only the same as a 17")
4: 17" 5:4 (for comparison)

Maybe he is coming from a 19" crt where a 20.1" WS would be a very nice upgrade or maybe he is coming from a 21" crt where a 24" WS would be a nice upgrade neither of which you lose any height.

Your post makes it sound like you will lose real estate if you go with WS.

WS is just better for movies and some games. For movies you get more pixels and viewing area and for games like Half-Life 2 you get a lot more lateral viewing area which is very helpful in FPS games.

I just upgraded from a 18 inch viewable gateway crt to a dell 2007fpw and its like night and day. The Dell is the best monitor i've ever seen and I absolutely love the widescreen over my 15.4" laptop screen and my other 18" crt. It seems to be opinionated though. I'd say go to best buy and look at the widescreen gateway they have there just as a comparison and see how it looks to what you presently own.

I was answering you, when you stated you couldn't see a reason why someone given a choice would chose 4:3. I was giving you reasons.
Now you know.

im going from a gateway pos 17 inch monitor to a decent lcd

I play bf2 and CS:S so that is one of the things i would like to have my monitor good for. Also I do have an x850xt pe so i can run decent resolutions on games.
