Upgrading for gaming

Hello I have an old computer and am wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to play modern games. I am looking to play GW2, Dota2, and PlanetSide2.

I currently have:
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
CPU: Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz
RAM: 2GB DDR2 800 Mhz
GPU: Nvidia 8800 GT
PSU: Corsair 550W
OS: Ubuntu 12.04 primarily but can dual boot Windows if performance requires it.

I have a 23 inch monitor with 1080p resolution.

Would I be able to simply upgrade to more RAM and a newer video card to play those games? If so, what's the cheapest replacements I could get. Thanks for your help.
 
Not really, The CPU is a bit anemic for GW2 and PS2.
 
If you got a new motherboard/CPU (and upgraded to DDR3) you'd be set and only have to buy 3 things.

I've played Planetside 2 with the 8800 GTX on a system comparable to yours and it still holds up. Like Danny mentioned, your CPU is kind of your weakest link.

in my opinion if you are going to upgrade, you should make it last, you're going to need to replace that mobo/cpu if you want to keep up much longer.

What's your budget?
