So my dad uses his computer mainly for trading. He's got 2 14 inch monitors and can have up to 16 charts on each screen. The budget is $400-500

Processor: 149.99 Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz

PSU: $69.99 ENERMAX Tomahawk ETK500AWT 500W

MOBO: $89.99 GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX

RAM: $51.99 Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066

VID: No idea

Thanks for looking and any help or pointers.

You don't need a quad for trading stocks...
Get a dual core. And a mobo with integrated graphics. If your dad doesn't game, a video card is useless.

a core 2 duo is 114 at the lowest. I dont want this to be a low range system. This is going to be a decent mid range system that will last a while. Over time windows slows down so getting a decent system will give me more time between reinstalls

That build is pretty bad for the money. Here's a better build:
$220 - AMD Phenom II X4 925 CPU + ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO AM3 AMD 785G mATX Motherboard combo
$94 - G.Skill Ripjaw Series F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$60 - Corsair 450VX 450W PSU
---
Total: $374 plus tax and shipping

Twice as much RAM, slightly faster CPU, and significantly better quality PSU. The motherboard's onboard video supports two monitors at once.

Oh and does he really have 14" monitors? Jeez that's small. Did you mean 24" monitors?

And no, a decent system will not give you that much more time between reinstalls. As long as you do proper maintenance, a Windows XP PC will be only a tad slower than it was a year or two since its last install.
