Upgrading CPU Question

I have a question about upgrading my CPU.

My computer I currently use is a Shuttle and the PSU is rated at 400W.

Currently using a AMD AM2 4400+ OCed to 2.7 GHz, 4GB of ram, 8800GTS 320MB and everything runs fine.

I am wondering if I should upgrade the CPU to a AMD Phenom. I believe the wattage difference is probably a bit more.

Does anyone think I should do this upgrade? I'm just not really sure if the PSU can handle it.

If not, I'll probably just build a new comp r something. Just like to hear some input :) Thanks.

There are some 65w and 95w Phenom Quads you can get.. but honestly, I'd wait for the Phenom Quad 45nm that is due out pretty soon. They already made the first wafers and are testing them out with some pretty darn good results.

I am definitely interested in them phenom cpus. I'm not really planing on doing much OCing, just want a more powerful cpu.

Though I'm not really good with the energy conversions r w/e. The shuttles 400w psu, would it be able to handle a much more powerful cpu? I know the 8800 vid cards use a big chunk of power already, and my shuttle runs 2 hardrives (400gb + 500gb).

However I've also heard that the shuttle's PSU are pretty powerful and can handle more than specified. My current cpu is overclocked and running 1.35V i believe. However the wattage of the CPU I'm sure is a bit less hogging than the phenoms. Problem is I dont want to build a whole new comp, I like my shuttle cuz its nice and compact. PSU is definitely a limiting factor in upgrades

Would it be wise to get the 65W phenoms? (Also taking in account the temperature increases because of 3cores) CPU currently is around 50-55 deg celcius w/ my current setup idle

Yeah, in a shuttle sized case, a 65w processor would be wise. There is one 65w AM2 Quad out now on newegg. It isn't the fastest, but I'm sure more will start appearing on the market soon, especially with the 45nm shrink coming.

There is a 2.0GHz 65w Quad Phenom as well, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. (Phenom X4 9350e)

How does that CPU compare to mine performance wise since you say the Quad is clocked slower, but has more cores? (i have it OCed to 2.7GHz but its dual core)

It all depends on what you're using it for.. and I'd say in the future we'll see many more applications, games, and OS's taking advantage of four or more cores.

I'm in the same boat myself, have a SN27P2 that has a 6000+ in it currently and i'm talking the 125W version, not the 89W one, (full system specs in sig) and have been toying with the idea of upgrading (possibly with a Phenom and/or 4850). My main concern with the Phenom idea tho is while AMD "said" it was backwards compatible with AM2 socket boards, I've had no luck searching for any details to say whether or not it'll work in my rig. Checking the 9850 BE, that should theoretically just plug in and go but dunno if it'll work and dont own a computer shop to just try it out.

BIOS update will also be an issue too as i dont think Shuttle have updated the BIOS for it in a long time . . . could be wrong tho, just haven't checked lately.

You mentioned you had no luck searching. Did you happen to look on shuttle's website?

my son's comp has amd x2 @ 2.9ghz w/ ati 3650 512mb vid card...when he is using FRAPS when recording the fps falls to 15-20 and of course it stutters. So i need your input you think its time for a new vid card ( asus 9600gt ) or an x4 phenom 9550 @ 2.5ghz if possible. thanks for the help.

Yeah checked that shortly after posting, doesn't mention Phenom for SN27P2, they NOW have an AM2+ socket SFF box but that thing doesn't seem a potent (4Gb max, 300W, single slot PCIx card). During my earlier searchs tho i was checking there but they didn't say anything. Hell they didn't have the 6000+ cpu added to their compatability list till a short time ago and they still dont have the X1950XTX listed as supported yet that works fine.

Might shoot em an email as re the XTX, their support guys said that it would work and that was only just as it was released (againt didin't have any mention on their site).

Definitely a new video card. The 3650 is a crappy card for gaming. Get the 9600GT.

Yea i got the Shuttle SN27P2. I know the PSU is rated at 400W, but mines runnin pretty hot to the touch (back area where fan is on the psu).

I'm not really sure where to check to see if I am already at the max or is there still room to go for power consumption. I do feel that vista is slowing things down as I got more stuff running in the back such as antivirus etc. 4GB of ram is not cutting it.

The vid card is pretty fast but I feel the fps in the games i do play is being limited by the CPU.
