I'm looking to upgrade my wife's video card so that it plays SW: TOR a little better. We are fine with low settings, but she gets some laggyness in some areas. She has this computer: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4300468

I have already replaced the CPU with an Athlon x2 250 Regor. The comp has only a 250W power supply so i figured I'd need to upgrade the PSU as well.

My comp has an 8800gt 512mb so if we can upgrade mine for under $100, I can move the 8800gt into hers. She doesn't game as much or as often as me. I'm just so out of touch on the relative rankings of the card names/designations.

You didn't post your PC specs so take this information with a grain of salt.
These cards can be found new for $100 more or less.

better - HD4870, HD5770, HD5830, HD6770, HD6790
ok - GTS 250, GTS 450, HD4850, HD5750, HD6750

Of course you will still need to upgrade your PSU as well no matter which GPU you get. Depending on which one you would need between a 400W (GTS 450, HD4850, HD5750, HD5770, HD6750, HD6770) and 500W (GTS 250, HD4870, HD5830, HD6790) PSU.

Athlon X2 250 Regor 3.0 dual core
2gb ram
windows 7
Compaq CQ5600F (M2N68-LA (Narra5) mobo)
currently the comp has the 250watt psu it came with. was planning on a 500watt replacement.

Only game she really plays is Star Wars: The Old Republic

I was hoping (don't know if it's realistic) to get both video card and psu for $100
 
you are going to need more ram too. 2gb is NOT enough for you to play some modern games without hitching.
 
Maybe the first thing i should do is spend the $40 and bump the ram to 4gb. That's something i can do soon. Thanks for the help.

I thought you said you were going to give your wife your old 8800GT and get yourself a new video card. That is why I asked for you to post YOUR specs and not your wife's.
 
HAHA sorry i didn't comprehend... guess it was late. I wouldn't mind upgrading mine and giving the 8800gt to her, but I have a feeling it's not in my budget to do so. My specs are:

Athlon x2 250 regor 3.0 dual core
Biostar A880g+ mobo
4gb GSkill DDR3-1333 ram
Windows 7


Either way I'm going to get her up to 4gb ram today then look into the video card and power supply in a couple weeks.
 
Sorry it's taken a couple days to respond. I'm running with a BFG Tech 650Watt power supply. I have a viewsonic 19" and run at 1280x1024.

pass on 4870 that is nearly 4 year old tech now....

OP should save up a few $$ for a new system you know something based upon a i3 or similar and a 1080p panel. Sell your old stuff for a few hundred to offset the cost
