So after holding out for Haswell, I've decided to stop waiting - primarily because of my desire to game in surround, and secondarily the abundance of sale prices. Build is as follows:

i7-3820 - Microcenter $199
EVGA X79 SLI - Newegg $129.99 - $30 MIR ($99.99)
H100 - TigerDirect $99 - $10 MIR ($89.99)
Corsair Vengeance Series C70 Gunmetal - Microcenter $114.99

Ram is TBD, any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm considering a higher speed (2133 or more) 16GB quad channel kit since I will be overclocking. Other than that I'm going to use my current GPU, SSD, Optical drive & power supply.

When IB-E comes out I'll be upgrading the CPU and the ram to 32 GB. (the 'old' cpu and ram will be used for another build at that time)

I'm hoping that I'll be able to just uninstall the motherboard drivers in Windows 7...

A few things in no particular order:

a) NewEgg has decided to screw [H], shopping from Amazon is highly encouraged by the landlords as a result. :)

2) EVGA x79 boards have a rep on the internet for problems...and unless you're going to be running SLI, 2011 doesn't have many benefits over 1155, especially if you're shopping the bottom of the barrell 4 DIMM 2011 boards.

III) Sandybridge doesn't really benefit much at all from RAM over 1600mHz RAM.

Didn't know about a) otherwise I would have picked up the board at Fry's using their price match - I'll get the gunmetal color C70 case at Microcenter, it's only $114.99.

as for 2) I've ordered the K2 revision which is confirmed to be able to boot with a 3820. Like I said I'm going to surround so SLI is very likely in my future.

Since I'm starting with a 3820 I will have to raise the clock to overclock, so the faster the ram the better if I understand correctly. So far the 2400 DDR3 16Gig kits look to be a good price point.

The BCLK is pretty much locked at 100MHz (with a 8% variance). But your CPU does support 2400MHz modules by adjusting your memory multiplier. I would recommend 1600MHz memory as well as the later will yield very little in performance. Not to mention that some boards will not boot with 2133+, EVGA included.

Don't waste your money on 2133 unless you plan to run at lower speed and custom work the timings.

After 1866 on these boards, the performance gains are miniscule compared to what better timing will give you. Run @ 1600 w/ crazy timings or 1866 with good timings. Also make SURE you get no more than 1.5V memory.

1. You wont be able to Overclock worth a shit with that CPU...

2. As said, 1155 is more then enough, if not the same then 2011, and you'll get better hardware with A LOT more support from the community if you have problems, which you might.

I see you are getting the proc for a good deal.. so in the end it'll be a great bang for the buck. But DON'T expect to overclock it much...

3. I recommend the ram in my sig, it's considered some of the best OCing ram out. I'm running 2200Mhz :D

1. we shall see, the motherboard is on the way and the cpu is sitting on my desk. I predict I'll be able to use the 125 bclock strap as others have done.

2. I'm not interested in paying Intel for integrated graphics, and I want a platform that can be upgraded, so 2011 is my choice.

3. after some research it looks like prices skyrocket for RAM higher than 2400 MHz, so I'll select a quad set 4GB sticks at that speed.

P.S. I did some searching and found a similar thread mentioning the 3820 and saw how 1155 kept comming up, thanks but it's not for me.

If you're getting the H100, consider the H100i instead as it's the newer version. Having used both, I prefer the H100i.

Thanks, I'm trying to figure out what fans to get for push-pull with the H100i. No idea why corsair doesn't have them linked as an add-on on their product page. Trying to order everything so I will be able to do the build over the weekend. I can always change to push-pull later.

Lol at thinking the 2011 is for you when you aren't even taking advantage of it.

How am I not? Going to get 4 channel ram and buy 3 monitors and video cards for surround... So, huh? I don't need help with that part (it's for the video section anyway if i did).

Because even 1155 will take 32gb and 2 video cards.
If you are going to be using it for photoshop or VM's, then yeah, 32gb might be useful.

People are just trying to save you money, like people buying a 1500w PS when they run 1 video card and cpu.

In the end its not our money and as long as your happy that is what counts.

I went with 2011 over 1155 for future upgrade options with ib-e which seems like what he wants go do as well

If he wants 2011 more power to him :)

True, but really only if you overclock, Just like the 2500K to 3570K, there is only a 200-300mhz difference in speed.

He said he will be over clocking , also at the prices he's getting for the hardware, I really don't see how a good 1155 will be that much cheaper. Unless the 1155 has some future generation processors coming out for it I think 2011 is the best for him

I'd ditch the water cooling and get a Noctua NH-D14 (make sure you get the 2011 brackets with your purchase!!)

I'm running my 3930k at 4.6GHz on air and testing higher (wanna hit 4.8!) and it's so quiet it's unbelievable! Also, yes the 2011's don't care much about the speed above 1600; my RAM is 1866 and I'm running 8 sticks of 8GB's each! Just make sure you monitor your voltages and bump slow at any signs of instability. The 2011 is so easy to overclock, all it cares about is multiplier and voltage (for the simple OC's).

I was going to get the H100 / H100i (the H100i had a few improvements over the H100 - but also came with a few new issues as well)... but then I kept reading horror stories about them (the new H100i) leaking, and how Corsair's warranty doesn't cover more than $100 or $150 of your parts (can't remember which it was)... I work with a guy that had a custom water cooler setup and his cracked and leaked all over his graphics card. Sure closed-loop is manufactured in such a way that it's maintenance free, but it doesn't provide near the cooling power of a custom liquid setup; so why even risk it on closed-loop when you can get the performance and silence that rivals it in the form of an air cooler?!

I said I was going to get 3 video cards. Also, I will be doing multiphysics simulations on this machine - but that is secondary to surround gaming... Surround gaming to me means 3 monitors, and the first monitor I get will need 120FPS in BF 3, so I've yet to determine if my current GTX 680 can hack it. If I'm not mistaken the board I'm getting supports 3 video cards.

Good suggestion, though that HSF assembly looks huge, so it's something to think about. For the RAM I'm going to get a set I can try and push at a reasonable cost, also going to start out at 16GB and get a 32GB set when I upgrade the CPU. I'm hoping intel releases IB-E this year, no idea what the rumors have been.

True, but at near 5ghz, its not going to make much difference. :)

3 to 5 monitors! :)

If you get a chance, Vega has a big thread about his system with 3-4 video cards.

love it because of the prices. well, except for the crappy water cooler. water cooling is a novelty. heat pipes are better!

if your windows doesnt work, it is often because the sata controller is set to a different mode (achi or not). if even that doesnt work, then macrium has a good hardware independent restore feature.

If I was upgrading from my am2+ board (LOL), I'd go 2011 but wouldn't CONSIDER anything other than the $200-$300 intel boards with intel nics on board & 8 ram slots. I'd also be surprised if they don't have AMT as well..

That is just me however...

Yeah, I wouldnt cheap out on the motherboard. I would get one that has at least 3 x16 slots and like you said 8 slots for more upgradeability.

The board I already bought was on sale, normally $270 I think, so not really cheaping out. I am hoping rev 2 of the board is better. After some research I agree on the intel boards, that bios looks nice.

intel boards are not better. the board you picked is fine as long as it has the features you want. there ARE boards with more features.

Noctura DH-14 ordered from amazon. I'm going to re-purpose one of my old full tower cases, hopefully the HSF will fit, if not I'll just buy a new case later. Really curious how the Windows 7 move will go. Still trying to figure out the RAM.

after more research, I'm going to pick up some low voltage Samsung RAM at Microcenter on Friday - it's on the way home from work... build scheduled for Friday/Saturday if shipping times hold.
