Hi, im wanting to upgrade my pc so i can play some of the newer games, i also want to be able to max out or at least high on GTA IV, i currently have an amd x2 2.8 ghz and a hd 4800 gpu i have 4gb of ddr2 ram but i run a 32 bit os, would upgrading to a 64 bit help also what do you think would be suitable upgrades i only have a am2+ mobo but i dont mind upgrading that if need be, thanks joe
 
It depends on your budget you are able to invest in upgrade. So we can suggest you something better. Although from gaming perspective I don't believe upgrading AM2+ has any rentability

You could throw in a newer GPU to get better performance in game, but that CPU is going to be a bottleneck. The best thing would be to build a new rig, but I'm assuming you don't want to do that?

What motherboard do you currently have? Depending on what it is you may be able to throw an am3 cpu into it.

As for upgrading to 64 bit, I would. That way you can at least have access to the rest of your memory. Plus a fresh install will make the computer feel newer.

yeah id rather just upgrade my rig as i haven't had it for to long.
the strange thing is that mother board doesn't recognize my processor properly, just says AMD uknown model

I've never heard of that brand, but apparently they make pretty solid boards.

According to the manufacturers support list the best you can do is a first gen phenom:

I guess id try and find one of those, as well as getting a newer gpu. You might also try contacting the manufacturer to see if you could use an AM3 chip.

GTA IV is fairly CPU and GPU heavy. However, if you have a HD 4800 series card with 1GB of VRAM, that should hold up in the GPU department for medium settings. From there, you're mainly looking at a CPU upgrade. However, the old Phenom CPUs weren't all that great and unless you can get one for ridiculously cheap, i.e for less than 20£, they're not going to be cost-effective upgrades. You should be looking at a new CPU + mobo + RAM.

Unfortunately, it appears that PSU is of low to generic quality according to these links. In other words, it does not appear to be even capable of 400W of power. As such, any upgrade would risk the chance of that PSU popping and killing the PC. So I'd recommend holding off any upgrade until you can afford a good PSU as well. If you can spare or save up another 50£, that should be enough to cover the costs of a new and good PSU.
 
hmm okay, guess im gunna pretty much start again but keep the same case and hdd, and sell the parts im removing as i g along to keep costs lower, thanks
