Upgraded to 8GB

I just got 8GB myself, didn't notice too much of a difference in games (not that I expected to anyway) but everything else seems snappier.

Why are you people so afraid of overclocking your RAM?

I have 2x1GB (ECC) and 2x2GB (non-ECC) DDR2-800 sticks running at DDR2-936.

And they have different timing specs and are different brands as well.

Overclock the crap out of everything! Keep it stable at the same time though.

curtisfong - best not to buy high CAS RAM. Also, did you try upping your NB voltage a little. 4 sticks of RAM usually requires that you up the NB voltage a little.

Not afraid, it just doesn't overclock well in my system. Not sure if you've tried to OC DDR3 or not, or more specifically the DX38BT motherboard, but I don't think either of them are near as forgiving as what you're working with. I'd love to get 3.6 Ghz out of my proc, but after all the headache I've gone through so far, it's not worth anymore time.

Hi !

Jsut upgraded to 8 GB of G.Skill PI Black Edition PC2-6400 on Vista x64.

WOW !!!!!! Big improvement when you're upgrading from 2 GB !!! Virtual machines work like a charm !!!!!

Tried to disable the Windows' pagefile. Seems to work when I do it in system properties, but I still have Page File section of almost 8000MB in Task Manager. Is that normal ? How can I completely disable it ?

Thank you !

Mr. Gates does not like you disabling his page file. :p

Just kidding but, with 8GB you'll never notice a difference with it off. I'd leave it alone unless you are truly running out of HD space.

It is mislabeled. It is titled "page file usage" but it actually measures memory usage. If you doubt it, take out half your ram, and look at it again. Where is currently shows almost 8000MB now, it will show almost 4000MB then.

Mmm... I'm not quite sure of that. Currently, the "page file" is showing 1762 MB ( 1.724609375 GB ) while in the memory graphic it's showing 1.66 GB used.

Sometimes, the total of this "page file" vary. Sometimes the limit is 7900MB, other times it's 8101 as currently. The task manager is showing 1735 MB free and 5390 cached memory.

Sorry, I mixed that up with XP. XP does that. Vista has it listed correctly.

On my Vista machine, with 8GB, the pagefile line says "1224M/9988M"

That's a total of about 10GB, which would be my 8GB ram plus my 2GB pagefile.

I'm gonna go with the guess that figure includes all usable memory space, including the physical ram, and the pagefile, together, but that's just a guess.

I have a DX38BT, and I bought one for her too to keep the systems close for troubleshooting/maintenance.

I found that my E8400 overclocked to 3.6 very easily using

Her PC on the other hand with the same CPU/Board/RAM/BIOS versions - won't even OC to 3.2 without just up and shutting off. I spent hours on end reading the [H] articles on how to overclock, what to set, what to look for, how to test. I got Prime 95 to run stable for 4 hours on hers. She launches into a game - 30 min later..PC turns off, and returns to stock 3.0 clocks.

In the end...I said F it. Its not worth the man hours to get her 200 more MHz. We cant tell the difference in gaming. She cranks up her settings as high as she can get away with, and the system just humms along.

We'll build Corei7's next fall and not even worry about the missing 200 to 600 MHz - too much stress for too little result :)

I just went from 2gb to 8gb, what a pleasure!

I killed my vista page file, first set it to 16mb and restart, then disable and restart.

I disabled some other stuff in vista that thrashes the disk immediately after install. Now page file is dead too. Zero thrashing whatsoever, how nice.

Truthfully 8gb is still overkill, 4-6 is plenty. I havent come close to filling all this ram up =) But as said above, too much ram can never hurt.

Its a good time to be a pc enthusiast, prices are amazing and speeds and blazing. I am in love with my new unlocked Phenom II btw =)

I spent many weeks researching my upgrades, allow me to share the memory tips I picked up.
AMD Phenom II & Intel Core2Duo&Quad systems, just get DDR2-1066 with 5-5-5 timings at 2.1v or less. Each good manufacturer has a set of these that will work well. I prefer G.skill and corsair personally. G.Skill is the best value.

My IRL buddy has a core 2 quad system, 3ghz chip oc'd to 3.6. He uses 4x 2gb of g.skill 1066 cas6.
My sig system uses corsair dominator 1066@cas5. Both do 1000mhz 5-5-5, both of us cannot get any higher no matter what due to 4 slot populated limitation.

As for DDR3, just remember if you dont get fast enough memory ddr2 systems will beat you. And only getting 3gb with an i7 is a bigtime waste IMO, dont go i7 unless you have the money to do it right. The Phenom 2 or Core2Quad's are here to keep you company in the meantime.

I too upgraded from 4GB to 8GB of Patriot Memory RAM. The voltage is at 2.1 and my timings are 4-4-4-12. I didnt notice any difference in speed but it does smooth out multitasking. The reason for my upgrade is bcuz I use Sonar 8 with lots of Virtual Instruments and effects and anyone who does music production can affirm that this stuff gobbles RAM like nothing else.

Recently I had Adobe Premier encoding some home videos to h.264, a couple browsers, some downloads, and I was watching a movie or something, and I noticed that I was using over 4gb just with that stuff running. Much of it must have been prefech though.
