I got a few issues with this POS I'm working on and am looking for a bit of advice since its been a while since I have been in the desktop market and troubleshooting hardware. I mostly deal with servers, applications and web hosting now.
Patient:
Shuttle SS21T barebones (SIS 761GX and 966L, 250W power supply)
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (Windsor)
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB Corsair XMS PC2 6400)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
Optical Drive: LITE-ON LH-20A1L-06
History: This machine was built 3 years ago by me for my dad, uses it for email solitaire, and general web surfing. Worked great but was getting slow for video's. So I purchased AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (was Sempron 3400+) and 4GB Corsair memory kit (was 2 x 512MB crucial PC2 6400). Worked fine with Windows XP SP3, dad was happy with speed but asked to upgrade to Windows 7. I got a legit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for him, installed clean and worked fine except problem #1: No video card drivers for onboard SIS Mirage 1 graphics. Solution#1: purchased Nvidia Geforce 8400GS card, installed, booted, detected, reboot, hangs on boot. Booted to safe mode, set VGA driver, reboot, works fine, get latest drivers from Nvidia, install, reboot, BSOD. Bad card? Solution#2 Exchange Nvidia card and get Radeon HD 3450, install, boot, install drivers, reboot, BSOD.
I had a AMD Phenom 9450 that had similar issues Windows Vista x64 so I decided to load Win7 x86. Now I don't get BSOD when Radeon HD 3450 drivers load but the machine very choppy. If VGA drivers are loaded its fine. Anyone have any ideas?
Power supply too small?
Bad PCI-Express port?
