Upgraded 970 to 1080 - looking for confirmation

I just made the upgrade in the title. I did a clean install of the latest drivers and went in to take a look at the "NVIDIA Optimal Settings" and I'm confused by the recommendations.

Take Fallout 4 for example, many of the recommended settings are lower than what was set for the 970. Has anyone else noticed this? It is possible that originally the optimal settings were "ultra" and later changed by NVIDIA and I just didn't update them? Can anyone confirm?

The recommendations may be way off with GFE, depending on the profiles downloaded. I once had recommendations shift from one thing to another, then back again with the same GPU installed.

Also, you can try to see if the performance VS quality slider in GFE is set to quality.

Attached is an image of this area.

Don't use GeForce Experience, mystery solved!

But seriously, just adjust the game settings on your own. GFE is for people who don't understand in game settings and the app can make things easier for them (especially with slower cards).

This.

I did a similar upgrade to yours and noticed the same thing OP. Even the recommended settings for my 970 was way lower than it could handle in a lot of cases and it's even worse with my 1080. Just adjust the settings yourself to suit your taste and ignore the GFE recommended nonsense.

I can confirm, made the exact same upgrade as you did, GFE is horrible about choosing "optimised" settings. I too recommend not using it and doing all your graphic adjustments/settings in the game itself.

If you're getting lower settings, be sure to check the recommended resolution if you have DSR enabled. Going from a 970 to a 1080 may have bumped the recommended resolution from 1080p/1440p to 4K. I noticed this even moving from Mitan to Pitan.

Aside from that, GFE can provide you a good starting point. My issue is that their suggested settings are for 60 FPS when I'm shooting for 100 FPS. Turning down the quality slider one click from recommended will usually get me there in games that are struggling, and then I'll tailor the options to my own preference.

Thanks for all the replies. I figured that I would use GFE for additional comparisons. I was feeling a little buyers remorse. I was never not happy with the 970, but I wanted to do super sampling with the Vive and you just need a ton of power to do so.
