upgrade

i recently decided to upgrade my processor. i went from a pentium 2.4B to a 3.2E (just got it today). after switching the processors i switch on the computer and i get a warning message in POST that the CPU has been changed and that i need to go into BIOS and make sure everything is correct for the new processor. the first problem i encountered was as i was trying to leave BIOS. quit w/out save works fine but save and quit does not. sort of. i saves, just doesn't quit and reboot (that must be done manually).

of course then i still get the CPU warning again since i never really saved and quit BIOS. i can skip the warning by pressing f1 so that problem is more of a nuisance than anything.

i real problems are occuring now after a new install of windows (and no, i didn't reformat to fix the CMOS problem, the drives were just due). EVERY SINGLE program i tried to install caused at least 1 error. CD's kept getting cyclic redundancy errors, files off of spare hard drives crash because "so-and-so.file does not match so-and-so.cab", and whatever programs do manage to install promptly crash after startup (like zonealarm and firefox).

has anybody ever heard of this sort of thing happening with a new CPU (the BIOS thing and the program crashes) ? everything worked flawlessly on the old 2.4 and everything was up-to-date (drivers, BIOS version, windows updates). i'm completely baffled as to how this one new component is causing all this trouble.

here are the system specs if it helps:

3.2 prescott - watercooled, stayed around 135f all day
1gb corsair xms pc3200 (2x512)
dfi lanparty 865pe 'B'
x800 pro
audigy 2 zs
2 raptors (raid 0) + 1 storage drive
52x cd burner, 16x dl dvd burner
enermax 350w psu <- could this not be enough power anymore w/ new CPU?? could that cause the kind of problems i'm having??

well, thank you for your patience for reading all of this and thanks in advance for any help.

Make sure your BIOS is flashed to the latest version. If it is, try a new PSU

Replacing a CPU may not be the same as replacing a motherboard. But, I've read if you do change the motherboard, you should format your HD.
As a matter of fact, when I do a clean install, I prefer to use a startup floppy and type in "fdisk" to delete the primary partition and re-create the primary partition.
So...some ideas.

Damn, hell is still a a bad word?

You should be able to just replace the CPU with none of that crap, although it's supposed to give the warning about the CPU being changed. If you reset your CMOS & load defaults it might clear it up. Plus might need a certain BIOS revision or later to support it, but I'd hope you'd already know and have dealt with that.

that's exactly what i thought!! you should just be able to swap w/out problems. i've reset CMOS many times and yes, the BIOS is the most up-to-date version available and, of course, the CPU is listed as supported on dfi's website.

like i said, i'm baffled. i've never had any kind of problem like this with an upgrade before.

any other ideas out there?

yes of course. hard forum rule #7. i forgot. my apologies.

judging by the view to reply ratio i'm assuming everyone else is confused by this too. so after these questions i won't pester you guys about this.

is it possible that these kinds of errors could be caused by insufficient power? my 350W psu worked fine for my old 2.4, but does the prescott require more juice than it can handle?

is there any other condition that my arise after installing a new cpu that would cause these kinds of anomalies?

thanks again guys.

keep it [H]ard
