Just curious if anyone has done an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8, and if so, how it went? I'm tempted to try/switch to Win 8, but I really don't look forward to re-installing all my programs and fiddling with save games and everything; but at the same time, I'm still kind of leery of doing an in-place upgrade.

Anyone have any experiences to share?

Edit: I looked for one of those compatibility checkers for Win 8, but couldn't find anything - anyone know if/where one is?

I ran the upgrade on my laptop (early 2012 13" macbook pro) in bootcamp and so far so good. Everything I've tried is working fine, office, wordperfect, crestron...

The installer has a compatibility checker that will tell you what programs on your system are incompatible. I upgraded Win7 Ultimate to Win8 Pro, it told me to uninstall MSE and Alcohol 120%, I did, and the install went just fine. No issues whatsoever.

I did the W7 -> W8 upgrade, but during the final reboot, it bombed out with an error and I had to completely reinstall. I didn't bother with writing down the error or doing much research on it, as a reinstall is not a big deal for me - I have my documents stored on the network, and the other programs I need can be reinstalled easily enough, as I keep the installers backed up on the network as well.

As an aside, a Windows 8 installation is even faster than a Windows 7 installation - what used to take 20 minutes or so from USB key is now about 15 minutes.

I tried an upgrade from Win7 to Win8 with the preview and it went very, very badly. It took over an hour to install (was a big red flag right there!), but when it did the final reboot it booted into the system repair utility and it couldn't repair it. I ended up just installing fresh and it was fine...

Clean install of Win8 this evening took 8minutes 50seconds

That includes booting from the dvd, typing the key in, selecting language, selecting custom install, creating disk partition and copying files from slow-ass HP-DVD-RW :D

Unfortunately, that is followed by a couple of hours (at least) of finding and installing applications, followed by another month of trying to do something only to find out that application isn't installed yet, and then installing it.

Upgraded to Win 8 over Win 7, played with it and then promply decided to put Win 7 back on the machine. Upgrade took about 20 minutes on the desktop listed below

I tried to "upgrade" to Win8 but I get this error message:

"Windows 7 Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. "

So much for an easy upgrade......Way to go M$.

Sounds familiar, you have always had to upgrade to the same level of windows package. pro to pro etc. Nothing new, don't know why this should come as a surprise. Than there is the evaluation software issue.

There's no supported upgrade path from evaluation to retail, so you would have to format at some point anyways. this is why it was recommended to install it on a VM.
