It's time for an upgrade and i'll be coming from the current spec in my sig.

Things i'll be keeping:-
Hard drives, GPU, PSU, Heatsink.

Things i'll be buying with a budget of around £500 ($750):-
CPU, Mobo, RAM, Case, SSD, Win 8 (already purchased)

What i'll use it for:-
Gaming, mainly at 1080p (using a tv), films, tv, internet etc.

So...first question is, now that Haswell has arrived what should i go for?

I'm leaning towards the new 4670K (K because i will be overclocking), its new and only appears to be around £20-£30 more expensive then my next choice which would be a 3570K. Also the new 8 series chipset seems to support more USB3 and Sata3 devices and should be more 'future proofed' if that's even a thing these days...ive been out of the game for a while.

Which would you go for?

Cheers.

I would go for the 4670k, investing in older tech makes no sense unless you have specific needs (Sandy-E for example).

True, cheers.

The only reservation i have is that it's brand new and hasn't been tried and tested by the masses. I never usually got for the latest stuff. Always tend to wait and see, make sure there's no bugs or problems to iron out in a revision. Though it's been over 5 years since i last upgraded and the moneys burning a hole in my pocket...

I wouldn't hessitate to jump on Haswell. Nothing major so far, except :

1) Higher thermals
2) A little lower frequency headroom (core and IMC)
3) Weird behavior with 1st gen SandForce SSDs (1xxx)

Everything else seems peachy on both my 4770K + Z87-GD65 setups so far.

Cheers WhoBeDaPlaya, im not to bothered about thermals and lower frequencies so long as i get a little extra out of an OC. Can honestly say the only reason i kept my Q6600 for so long was because the bump to 3.4 kept it ticking over fine in most games i play.

Im thinking of getting a 840 Pro SSD which shouldnt cause any problems.

Can i ask, what made you choose the MSI Z87-GD65 for both your Mobo's. I'm looking into them right now you see, thinking of going down the Gigabyte road but im open to suggestions.

This is going to sound silly, but one of the main reasons I chose it was because of its looks.
The red color scheme matches my existing reference 7970GE perfectly and the dragons look nice.

I could have gone with the G45 (like I would usually do), but since this build will probably last me another 4-5 years (just like the i7 920 I'm upgrading from), I splurged and spent the extra $30 for the GD65 :D

In your shoes I would go with Haswell. While there is only a modest improvement over Ivy the new motherboards do have better features, like more SataIII and more USB3.

I'm going from a similar core (Q6600, which will be passed to Mom, not sold).

Items kept - all drives, case, PSU (for now), GPU (also for now).

New items - CPU, CPU cooler, motherboard, RAM (already purchased)

Target - i5-4670K (Haswell-K)

CPU - Intel Core i5-4670K (http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0413251)

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H (http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0414773)

CPU Cooler - COOLER MASTER Hyper212 EVO (http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0373900)

RAM - MicroCenter 4GB x 2 DDR3-1333 Modules (9-9-9-24) (already on hand)

I originally had Ivy Bridge (i5-3570K) in mind - not Haswell. However, thanks to pricing sanity (and a price cut too large on this particular motherboard), I can go Haswell at Ivy Bridge pricing. All later upgrades (such as GPU, PSU, even RAM) can be downrange upgrades - not upgrades I *have* to do right away.

4670k or 3570k both are nice. Being that 4670k is the latest and greatest I would keep a look out for a deal on a nice Haswell MB and 4670k and build the latest and greatest and enjoy.

Definitely 4670k. The IPC increase over the 3570k will make it the same or better speed even if your overclock is 300-400mhz lower - additionally, the Z87 platform is much more appealing than Z77. I can't tell you how much of a PITA it is having a Z77 platform with only 2 Native SATA 6G ports (among other things.)

Just my opinion - I don't see a reason to get 3570k over the 4670k.

Man i really have the upgrade itch bad but im just not sure if I will see much improvement after reading all this stuff. Would I see much of a difference going for a AMD Phenom II X4 970 to a 4670K? Or would I be better off waiting for the next release from Intel or AMD and hoping is a much larger improvement.

This is entirely dependent on what type of applications you run, but i'm 99.9% sure you will see a significant performance increase, yes.

Cheers everyone, right im sold on the 4670K. The weird usb problem sounds like it wont affect me but i might till the fix is implemented.

That doesn't stop me looking at parts though :) So...

CPU - i5-4670K http://www.ebuyer.com/467647-cpu-core-i5-4670k-3-40ghz-lga1150-box-bx80646i54670k

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD3H or UD4H http://www.ebuyer.com/507044-gigaby...1150-hdmi-dp-dvi-atx-motherboard-ga-z87x-ud3h
(Any other suggestions? My last mobo was Giga which is why im going for one again)

RAM - Crucial 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Ballistix CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V http://www.ebuyer.com/389658-crucial-16gb-ddr3-1600mhz-ballistix-sport-memory-bls2cp8g3d1609ds1s00
(No idea about the current DDR3 RAM. Any point with getting sticks with a higher speed? Ive seen them go all the way up to 3000MHz! Will i still be able to OC ok with the stuff ive selected here?)

Case - Corsair 300R http://www.ebuyer.com/351501-corsair-carbide-300r-case-cc-9011014-ww

SSD - Samsung 840 Pro 256GB http://www.ebuyer.com/410474-samsung-256gb-840-pro-series-ssd-mz-7pd256bw

These are just initial selections, any suggestions welcome.

Bit over my budget too at £680 but what the hell, its almost Christmas.
