Hey All,

Buddy just installed the Starcraft II beta, and it doesn't run, even on lowest settings. Help me help him!

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
1GB DDR 400
Geforce 6800GS 256MB

I'm thinking double the ram and rip and replace the video card. What's the cheapest card he could get that would work well you think?

Weird, according to blizzard it should run - well unless you are using vista or win7 then it calls for 1.5 gb ram.

And I'm reading that it's pretty CPU heavy, could his CPU actually be the bottleneck? ( I can't load any of the sites that have the minimum specs here at work, "blocked: catagory gaming")

The 8400GS would be a step down from the 6800GS. And yes his CPU would be the bottleneck. Any RTS game will more than likely be CPU heavy.

What PSU does your buddy have?

But if the 6800GS in that system is AGP based, there's virtually no cost-effective GPU upgrade. In addition, he's looking at a CPU, mobo, and RAM upgrade. And more than likely he has an old PSU. So basically, your buddy might be better off just building an entirely new PC.

I would upgrade the RAM first however DDR prices aren't cheap compared to DDR 2 or DDR 3.

I checked newegg and they don't carry 4GB kits anymore it seems...

How much of budget does your friend have?

If you have PCI Express then that helps a lot.
A 5770 for $149 should do the ticket. Can't beat the performance + DX11 capability at that price point.
He should also upgrade his ram to at least 2GB. 4GB is better, but it's probably harder to find for that type of motherboard.

Upgrading a system that old is nothing but a waste of time.

msi 785g
cpu
X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz
Ram
2x2

Assuming he is poor start with something like this /\. try to on board video card and if that doesn't work snag something like this
5670

low power should prevent the need for a new psu.

I've tried SC2 on low end hardware. It runs fine at 1440x900 on a radeon x1650xt and an 8600gt. Mind you both systems had dual core processors though. any card from as low as a Geforce GT220 or radeon 5570 should be enough for up to 19" LCD gaming.

It sounds like his RAM and CPU need the upgrade. Though the GPU could use an upgrade the CPU is holding it back far worse than the graphics card.

I find that odd, I have a friend running it on a 3.2 P4, 1GBDDR 400 and a 6600gt. Look for an extra gig or find an old athlon X2, either way he's at a dead end without an overhaul.
