Ok the wife got me a $150 gift certificate from Newegg for Christmas and I've been chomping at the bit to place an order. I'm can kick in another $200 or so right now so I'm looking for a bang for the buck upgrade. Here's my current system:

OS: Windows XP Pro (x86)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ BE (O/C to 3.2)
Mother board: ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
Video Card: BFG Tech GeForce GTX 260
RAM: A-DATA Extreme Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800
Disk drive 1: OS drive: WDC 250 GB 7200 rpm
Disk drive 2: Storage: Seagate 1TB 7200 rpm
Peripherals: Pioneer DVD burner (SATA 3.0)
Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX
Monitor: iNC 28' LCD (1920x1200)

I've been stalking Newegg for the past couple of days and have been debating this combo:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz
ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G
with the following RAM tacked on:

G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 (with the $15 off coupon code)
(Now I know the excess RAM will not do me any good right now but I am hoping to upgrade to Win7 (x64) sometime within the next few months.)

Given my current system, I'm asking the forum what they would do for a best bang for the buck upgrade. I don't play many "new" games but I do play The Witcher, Morrowind, Oblivion and EQ2. Any thoughts would be appreciated. :D

You can buy the ram now, but I'd wait a week or two for SB to be all over the place. I'm guessign this is going to push AMD prices way down.

That would be nice if it did. Of course part of wonders if what kind of gains I'd see when I do game with a new video card. The 6850 and Fermi 460 are pretty close in price right now ($210 roughly). Dang money burning a hole in my pocket.... ;)

Well that X2 5000+ is limiting your current GPU right now. So it's definitely gonna be a limiter for the GTX 460 and HD 6850 cards. So definitely do a CPU + mobo + RAM upgrade FIRST before considering any sort of GPU upgrade.

CPU + mobo wise, I'd go with this:

I hadn't thought about that but that is a good point about my CPU limiting the GPU. Looking at it, the combo you found is a better deal, I save $20 for and only lose 200Mhz. If the 955 O/C's like my 5000+ did that won't be an issue at the end of the day. Plus the mobo supports SATA 6 where as the other combo's mobo only supports SATA 3.
