i am currently running an OC'd 1050T. i have an amd 6850, with 8gb ram, 890fxa-gd70 mobo, and 700 watt OCZ psu. i am looking for a bit more graphics power and was wondering if i should just buy another 6850 and crossfire ... or buy a new 7950? or if you have a better idea let me know. thanks

MSI 890fxa - GD70 mobo

PSU: 700 watt OCZ - ocz700mxsp

budget: $300ish ... 7950 would be pushing it but i am willing to do it if the gain is justifiable.

What games at 1920x1200? What level of visual quality?

Out of curiosity, what's the model number of the OCZ power supply? How old is it?
 
Borderlands 2, maybe Guild Wars 2, CS:GO, SC2

It's a modular OCZ. Don't know model number will look later.

I am pretty picky and like things turned up.

That is the ModXStream Pro - a PSU that has been shown in a [H]ard|OCP review to be unable to provide the full 700 watts in realistic internal operating temperatures of close to 50°C. In fact, what you have is essentially only a 575W PSU even when it was brand new. You definitely got ripped off there, I'm afraid.

To answer your original question, you would be better off swapping out your HD 6850 for either the HD 7950 or the GTX 660 Ti. Since you "like things turned up," you might as well get the best card you can afford.

That was the reason behind all of the questions we had about your power supply. Your particular power supply couldn't handle a dual-card CrossFire (or SLI) setup. Fortunately, the current generation of video cards are more power-efficient than their predecessors.

2 friends built identical machines and have been running crossfire 6850s and 5850s no problems.

Consider yourself lucky. That PSU had so much (out of spec) ripple at maximum output that the PSU could have potentially killed off some or all of the components in your PC without the PSU itself exploding or dying out.
 
the only thing i ever read were issues with the PSU at high temperatures. we all built our machines in corsair 650D which has great air cooling so maybe that helped. but i was not aware how crappy it was.

should i spend $300 for a new PSU and another 6850?

I probably wouldn't bother getting another 6850 at this point.

If it were me, I would probably wait a few months until the 8xxx series is out to see how the 7xxx prices are affected and what the 8xxx series is like.

I would probably also shop around for a new/better power supply in the meantime. That way you can probably get a better deal than just buying everything right now.
 
That's a little above his budget of $300.

A 7870 + that PSU might be a little closer to what he can swing with a $300 budget.
