1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Primarily, gaming at 2560 x 1440. Nothing else.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
About $500 would be nice.

3) Where do you live?
Singapore, but its irrelevant because I can order off the egg.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
Either a new motherboard to do Crossfire with my currently existing 4890.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Everything except motherboard and possibly PSU. I have a Corsair HX620 to put in if I don't need a new one.

6) Will you be overclocking?
No

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
27" i5 iMac, so 2560 x 1440

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Before the end of the month/year

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Crossfire, possibly

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
Yes, technet subscriber.

Long story short - need lots of horsepower, 4890 just doesn't really cut it. Unfortunately because someone at ATI boo-booed, the 5870 is currently incompatible with the inputs on the iMac. My two realistic options are to buy another 4890 and Crossfire it (necessitating a new board), or to buy a brand spanking new 5970 (assuming I can get my hands on one). I don't particularly see the need to upgrade the previous-gen quad I already have since I have a i5 if I need to do any heavy lifting, so this build will solely be focused on gaming.

The new mobo + 4890 path would run me about $400, and I'm figuring that 5970 would run me a fair bit more so it seems simple enough, but I'm wondering if anyone has any other relevant input?

It would be very very close with the 620HX but should be doable with the HD4890 CF setup.

Your upgrade plan seems all right to me.

I'd sell the 4890 and get a 5970. Probably only cost you $50-60 more, for more power and DX11 support.

a 5970 won't cost "$50-$60 more"

EDIT: Nevermind. By the OPs logic it would, but another 4890 and a board isn't going to run anywhere near $400, so no, it won't. OP could get out with a second 4890 and a board for $250 easy. Assuming he could sell his 4890 for ~$130-150, he'd still be looking at another $200 to get a 5970 compared with 4890 CrossfireX, not $50-60.

Ok so:

Option 1 - sell 4890, buy 5970. Approximate cash outlay - $400.

Option 2 - buy another 4890, plus a crossfire board. Approximate cash outlay $250?

Would my existing 620HX be enough for both options, or would I need a new PSU for either?
