I was thinking about upgrading my cpu or gpu. What I have right now is the rig in my sig. I was looking at getting the i5 4690k or a GTX 970. I am wondering if this cpu would be enough for another year if I went with the 970 for 1080p gaming. I may try to do both, but I think right now I can only get away with upgrading one or the other.

Is your GTX 770 not cutting it for 1080P?

I'm not seeing a real good reason so far for you to upgrade either the GPU or CPU.

OP, here's your 770 vs. a 970.

A 970 would definitely be an upgrade over the 770, and likely improve your gaming experience even with that i5 4430.

If you plan on doing both in the long run, does it really matter which one you do now?

I am not positive if I will be able to do both that's why I want to do the one that will benefit me the most now. Sounds like that may be the 970.

I'd actually be curious to see the FPS gain in going from an 4430 to a 4690k. I can't seem to find any gaming benches with the 4430 except for this review, but they are lacking to say the least.

Perhaps you can update this thread when you do make the hop to a 4690k, perithimus?

The 970 is your best bet for a worthwhile upgrade if your GTX 770 isn't enough for you. Though to me, it seems odd to power a relatively high-end video card with a budget PSU.

If we're talking about stock speeds, here, it's not that much of a increase to justify the price. On Anandtech, they have the Core i5 4570S, which is a pretty close approximation of Core i5 4430:

Anandtech is showing not much of a difference between the Core i5 4570S (Core i5 4430) and the Core i5 4690K:

I'm getting an HX750 from corsair but the current psu I have now I think should still be enough for a 970 as I am sure it draws less power than the 770 I have now.

Wow. Well there you go. Here's that chip versus the 4790k in gaming. The OP is better off not upgrading his CPU at all!
