Hello all.

I find myself caught in a dilema. I bought the 6870 at lauch which i felt was a great call, because at the 210$ price point, it offered near 5870 performance and better crossfire scaling to boot, but then a month or two later i went out and bought myself a Dell 3007fwp-hc, the current card drives sc2 and BC2 fine, and i can get away with mostly ultra in the witcher 2, but once i turn on AA it starts to dip. So i need some feedback on a upgrade choice. I have no preference to either the red camp or green camp, but the green that i care about is the one in my back pocket. These cards will be under liquid, and overclocked and hard volt modded.

Option 1. Get another 6870 to crossfire.
Best performance for my dollar. But I have to deal with potiential crossfire issues (microsuttering, early launch suppourt or lack thereof) Cost to me $160

Option 2. upgrade to a 6970 (either a "purebred" chip or an unlock)
2gb frame buffer. Very good value for money. Cost to me to upgrade $120

Option 3. Gtx580 1.5gb
Fastest single GPU card on the market. Cost to me to upgrade $200
I dont necessarily mind paying top dollar for top performance, but not willing to spend 100$ over the 69xx series just for a few frames.

So with all the latest driver updates, and all options overclocked to their limits and put under a waterblock, what are your opinions on the above options?

Option 2. 69x0 volt modded and OCed.

I tried 6950 xfire eyefinity and found that a single card was just much smoother overall.

"Crossfire 6870 is the best option, especially since you already have a 6870, and would likely lose your ass buying a 6970 and selling the 6870" - kurt cobain

6870's aren't slouches and run great in xfire. Since you have one and it would probably be a PITA to sell it for a 6950/6970

GTX 580 3gb

If you are going to liquid cool then a GTX 580 3GB will be your best bet. However, that is really pricey because your going to be paying well over $500 for the card plus all the water cooling equipment. The 580 1.5GB models are better suited to 1080 or 1200p gaming rather than 1600p. If air cooling, then get another 6870 and crossfire because that would be a lot less work/risk than selling your 6870 and buying either a 6950 or 6970.

xfire 6870's are the best performing of the options listed & since its the cheapest too.

580 3GB if your green grows on trees.

6950 2GB reference if you can find one, or go for a pure 6970. Best value for money.

6870 XFire. Cheapest solution which will yield decent performance.

Then wait for the next releases from nVidia and ATI to see which offers the best bang for the buck single card solution in a year or two if you are needing to upgrade at that time.

Option 3, MSI GTX 580 Lightning Edition with waterblock would be unbelievably good with its high-end, custom PCB. 1.5gb is fine for 2560x1600. Clock the thing up to 1ghz and enjoy  .
