Hi guys for my nephews birthday I am helping him do a major upgrade for his work related pc.

He bought a puke box from bestbuy 5 yrs ago so I hope to re-use the case and dvd burner(I am assuming ide here).

He uses maya and some other development software, he has a degree in animation.

The budget is $600 CDN. I will be using www.canadacomputers.com and have a tigerdirect nearby. We are located in Toronto.

I recomended he buy a copy of 64 bit win7 home as his os is only 32 xp now thus limiting the all important ram to 3 gigs. If you guys think this isnt much of a concern I would rather forgo the os and beef up the rest of the build.

The components needed are as follows;

CPU
mobo
ram
psu
harddrive (500gig is plenty he uses Netflix)
gpu i was assuming 1gb ideal

No brand preference here, but he does plan on going to a 2 monitor setup in the near future. He currently has a 20" lcd and would probably go no higher than a 22" for the 2nd screen.

He has a legacy hd that he would like to access so ideally I would like the mobo to have and ide port and I am pretty sure that eliminates the 1155 socket and Intel afaik.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.

Also, why not use a IDE to USB enclosure?

Yeah I thought about the enclosure but thats another $40 for something decent. But if it would allow me to go intel i5 2300 that would be great.

Yeah just go for an enclosure. It's gonna be more pratical and would allow you to go with a faster CPU like the Core i5 2300/2400/2500 series CPUs. Motherboard wise, check out MSI's or Asus's H67 motherboards

Also, I would go for a single 4GB set of RAM or a 2x4GB RAM set for more room for future RAM upgrades.
 
Personally not a fan of that Gigabyte due to the traditional BIOs but it should be good. That setup seems ok to me
 
IIRC, ASRock's warranty is only for 12 months. That's something you may have to consider.

The key advantages of UEFI are a better-looking "graphical" interface (compared to the all-text BIOS) and support for drives larger than 2TB. Some manufacturers' UEFI interfaces (I know, a bit redundant) make it easier for you to adjust certain settings compared to the BIOS.
