Hi i have a q6600, xigmatek s1283 hsf. cm690 case 8800gt with 750w psu. My idle temps right now are 38° and i find that a bit too high. What can i do to lower it. All my fans are stock fans so should i buy better fans. Can you tell me which fans should be intake and outtake. Im using antec formula 5 compound. Should i switch it to like ocz freeze.
 
Unless you have already disabled it the motherboard will run the cpu fan at slower speeds to reduce noise at the expense of higher temps. Most of us with low idle temps have disabled this setting and use other methods.

Turn off speedstep/EIST in the bios and force the Xigmakek's PWM fan to 100 % or if your motherboard bios has the option try the legacy/voltage cpu fan speed control.

Front and sides should be intakes, rear and top should be exhaust.

Compound will not matter, Lapping the cpu and heatsink could yeild a 5C improvement if they are really off of flat.
 
38C isnt high at all.. its a 65nm core not a 45nm core.. 30-40C idle is about normal.. where it matters is your load temps.. since idle temps can be wrong most of the time.. example my idle temps on my amd be-2350 is 0C on both cores no matter what the ambient temp is on a stock heatsink at idle.. but my load temps are correct..
 
my load temps are like 48. I'll have to look into to it to see how i can increase my fan speed. Im thinking getting new fans and replacing the cm690 stock fans. Slipstream probably. does anyone know where i can buy them in a bundle and save

48c load it's a big deal at all...quite normal...I think maybe you've set your expectations too high for some reason.

58c at load is nothing. When you start getting into the upper 70's low 80's is when you start backing it off. 100c is max for the chip, but I wouldn't recommend running it near that.

At what clock speed and voltage is it set to when it hits 58c?

55-60c under full load for a 65nm quad isn't a big deal...I still think you're making it out to be more then it is. I had my Q6600 @ 3GHz with a measely 1.168v and i was hitting load temps of about 48c, and that was after lapping the CPU and Ultra-120 eXtreme.

Give us some more info please...but again...58c load is nothing to worry about with that chip, it's completely normal and to be expected.
 
IMO stock with an aftermarket HS/FAN that is kind of high.

However that is by no means hurting your CPU or anything else, I would just be dissapointed. If I clock my q6600 down to stock I idle at 19c.

I idle at 40-45c clocked at 3.6, but my load temps (core) are 65c, and that doesn't bother me at all.
