Understanding usb 3 pcie riser cards

I'm considering mounting my GPUs outside my box for cooling during 3D GPU rendering.

The adapter I'm considering has a 1x card that plugs into the MB and a USB 3 that connects the GPU plugged into a 16x adapter along with power to teh 16x adapter. I'm wonder if there will be siginicant slowdown with the 1x adapter, or am I not understanding the transfer speed correctly.

At 1x, yes. At 8x mostly only with serious cards and settings. The thunderbolt ones are 4x, jayz2cents has a review/comparison between TB and native.
 
I should have specified this will be for data transfer only, no graphics output. The GPU rendering in this case will be on render nodes...they are not hooked up to any monitor. They exist to receive a 3D file, render it, and transfer the image file back to a network location.
 
Then you should easily be able to estimate transit time per file at different bandwidths.
 
For what it is worth the crypto miner guys mostly do their hash calculations on gpus over 1x pipes with minimal impact over a bigger pciex pipe. in theory if you are doing pcie 3 at 1x you are close to 1gb/s.
 
It really depends on how often the data transfer occurs, and whether or not the GPUs have to swap out to the system RAM during rendering at all. Also, the size of the result data will have an impact here.

I suspect you'll be fine, but I'd probably test this at a small scale before scaling it up to a full cluster of many nodes.
