Iv'e recently had to format my hard drive. I used the windows xp home edition cd my pc came with and the product key that is on the side of my pc. When it comes time to activate windows, it says unauthorized product key. I called the number it gave me to activate windows by phone but it just said that my installation was invalid or something like that. Is there anything I can do without having to buy another copy of windows xp? Thanks.

Did you call and speak to someone or just listen to the recorded message? You need to talk to a person.

They don't do that anymore. You read that really long code to a computer. It heard me fine but it said it was invalid.

(866) 234-6020 MS technical support.. But, they may tell you to call the oem manufacturer of your pc.. Call them, if you can't get any help from MS.. Had a problem like that with my father in laws Dell and they(Dell) ended up giving him a new key..

not true, i had a similar problem about a week and a half ago, there is an option to speak to a person instead of a machine, you have to listen/wait/look for it..i forget where i found it

This is what you do.

You first have to go threw typeing the long code into the phone, and the computer at the other end will say its invalid, you then wait and you get transferred to a human :) who will then ask you for the first 6 numbers or so, then he gives you a new code which you type into your pc while you are on the phone.

Basically, you wait on the phone after your code is rejected by the computer and you will get to speak to someone for another code for your pc.

All that not being able to re-activate windows and your code being rejected is probably cuz you have installed that specific copy on your pc a good few times, and this is MS's way of just keeping an eye on you incase the copy is being used on multiple pc's.

When the operator asks if you only use your copy of windows on one pc, whatever you do, dont say, no i use it on more than 1 :)

I typed the code into the phone and the computer on the other end said it was invalid. Then it told me a bunch of other crap and then said goodbye and the call ended.

Only reason I could think this would be the case is if it was one of the product keys that got spread around the net on warez sites (I remember a number of Corp keys were disabled when SP1 came out).
