Damnit I have to ask for help again :)

Was running the SMP client under VMWare and successfully turned in around 100 WU on this PC (e6400 4GB RAM running stock everythng) and only had maybe 2 EUE. Switched it over to the Windows native client so I could get the benefit of having it release cycles for when I am doing something else (VMWare made things just a tad sluggish :) )

I dont think I have successfully turned in a WU yet. The client craps out, EUEs, stops folding at all, you name it, it does it. It successfully borks itself in every way imaginable. I literally have to ctrl-c it about 5 times a day and restart it (to the point that I keep the dos window and the SMP folder open all the time so I can ctrl-c and rerun fah.exe easier)

I am assuming that the machine is stable as it has no problem at all running inside VMWare. This may be silly but I would think with the additional overhead of VMWare this really should allow me to guess that the machine is stable enough for the client.

I have it installed into c:\foldsmp, ran the install and had MPI install twice successfully (or whatever it is that installs twice) I click on fah.exe, fill in the info, do NOT run as a service, have large WU turned on and everything else is the default. This is running under WinXP Pro SP2. I use the EXACT same configuration on the dual quad core xeon server I set up at work last week and it is merrily chugging right along with no issues at all but on this machine it craps out constantly. When it blows up it still shows as running in DOS (no errors except for EUE when it is actually running) but with 0% CPU usage until I stop it with ctrl-c and restart it. It then restarts, gives no errors and finishes another 15% (or 3% or 27% or whatever) and then stops again or EUE. When it EUE it goes right ahead and downloads another chunk and starts folding that until it decides to bork itself again. This is frustrating the hell out of me. If I have to I will go back to the VMWare option until they get the bugs worked out (and am going out of town for 4 days the rest of this week so I will run the VMWare version simply because I wont be here to restart the windows version) but I really would prefer to run this natively as I get work not done faster this way.

Any ideas? I can email you the log if you want to see it.

Have you reinstalled it? I have had a few boxes do this and reinstalling into a new dir fixed the problem.

Yep reinstalled about 9 times and every time it does the exact same thing...And resend me that PM.. I cant find one from you..musta been one of my drunken PM purgings I went thru (actually I don't drink so it was more like binge purging :)

Have you deleted all the files outside of fah.exe/config?

You may also find that if you go into regedit and search for “folding” you will find a ton of stuff that can be safely purged.

I have to assume you passworded your admin account and used that same password during setup and are using the proper host name.

To be honest VM never was that much of a burden on my machine and frankly it’s about 12% faster then the straight up windows client not to mention a bit more stable as you noticed.

Project 6 is coming up, we will have to see what that brings.

Oh, go through your system and look for leftovers of VMware and get rid of them. Some of the junk it leaves behind you need to be in safe mode to delete.

Luck

Good catch, it does seem directory sensitive, no clue why but I agree it is. I did use their directory name but put it under c:/ instead of program files.

Put my wife’s in the default and it seems to like that much better.

Go figure

The other thing I could thick that may bork it is "how stable is your network connection" ?
If the controler keeps resetting the connection or something similar, then that may glitch the SMP client.
Have a look in the system's event log files for something like that.

Luck ......... :D

This network connection glitch really sucks. If my internet goes down... or my router hiccups... or my bit torrent messes things up... then the SMP client has a heart attack and stops working. Every time. No exceptions. I have two boxen with the SMP and both act the same way.

I hope this is something that is being fixed.

Stop with the pron and SMP will work fine. JUST TRUST ME on this one, K :p

If they get the MPI daemon to bind to the "localhost" interface (whichever that is - I'm using *nix terms here, I think there's an equivalent in the *dows world) instead of a real ethernet adapter. The problem is the cores send messages back and forth via MPI, which can go over ethernet to other machines. So when the Ethernet interface it's talking to (which doesn't really send packets over the wire - it all happens in software because the traffic is going to the same host) shuts down, everything breaks.

I guess the MPI daemon is a program used to coordinate cores in a beowulf cluster via the network, or the multi processors / cores ? If yes, then this make sense... A bit of googling give me a definintion of MPI : Message Passing Interface.

To fix the issue, they should indeed bind to the right ethernet interfact, which is localhost, or 127.0.0.1 as we can call them.

I figured out the solution. I reopened VMWare and it is folding away happily. I will reinvestigate the Windows client when they decide to make it a bit more stable :)

BTW I have reinstalled into default directory, into a smp directory into foldsmp directory etc. I have wiped the registry of all things folding, deleted everything in the folding directory, my network connection is solid (I have 2 other windows boxes folding smp on them with the native client and THEY work just fine) I am just stymied as to what the problem is so I just went back to VMWare. Maybe when I do a fresh reinstall of XP in 3 weeks (every 6 months to the day it becomes time) I will try it again and see what happens.

Is vmware set to autostart on boot up? I had a similar problem briefly when I switched from vm to windows folding. I had shut down vm, and everything was fine until the pc rebooted from a windows update and my time went to hell. I stopped it from auto-starting and everything was back to normal.

I havent found a way to get VMware to start automatically, pick the right VM to choose and start automatically. Also I dont have that PC set to restart automatically if the power goes out beyond what my UPS does to hold it up. But as I have said before if the power goes out beyond the ability of my UPS to hold it up then chances are verything needs to be off as when they get the power back on there is about a 99% chance that it is going to go off and on about 30 times in 30 minutes which isnt the best thing in the world for electronics :)

I don't have a Vmware Server box infront of me but on GSX (should be close to the same)

Right click on the VM> settings > options > startup/shutdown > run VM as local system account/startup/shutdown have set to power on at host startup etc.

You also need to have the VM itself restart the SMP client, I never was too good with that. finstall helped me a ton with auto start in nix land.

Yeah I can get it to start I just never could get it to do everythng that my machine required it to do automagically. It would be nice but all I have to do if the power goes out for long periods is to call my wife and have her reboot everything if I am on the road (like I am now)
