I just ordered an Ultra 550w PSU from Tiger. I've had it for about a week and a half, and I was just wondering, has everyone had good luck with them? I hadn't heard alot about them, just saw that it was a decent price/wattage/modular... Oh, and one othere thing... Before this one, I had a Rosewill PSU. I had a terrible time running games, it was EVERY game that I installed, like CSS got below 60 fps. I knew this couldn't be right, but as of recent I noticed that games are running signifigantly better. Would the crappy PSU be the cause of this?

What model Ultra PSU is that? FYI, Ultra does make/rebrand some crappy PSUs and some very good PSUs as well. So with Ultra PSUs, it depends.

And if you look at the front page of this site, you'd have seen the review of the Ultra Extreme Edition 750W PSU. And that was a shitty PSU. However, the Ultra X3 1600w PSU was excellent. So like I said, depends on which Ultra PSU you're talking about.
 
I dunno if the PSU would affect FPS. If the video card wasnt getting enough power I would think the game would just end up crashing, not running slower.

I would've thought the same thing. But OP is saying he replaced his Rosewill with the Ultra and things are running better??? :confused:

It's highly improbable that a PSU would result in LOWER frame rates without system instability. Dying or bad power supplies usually result in system errors and crashes, not slow downs with no errors.

Do you READ HardOCP.com? Currently there's a scathing review of the Ultra X2 power supply. However other models of Ultra power supplies have gotten much better reviews. Just do yourself a favour and SEARCH the HardOCP review archives for Ultra power supply reviews.
 
I had always thought that the only good power supplies that ultra had were the X Finity series and Xpro EE series...

I don't remember where I saw it though, maybe on this site? They are also the most reccomended ultra's across the forums I visit.
 
X3s from Ultra are Tier 2 according to Johnny Guru and rated higher than Corsair. Only ones I would use.

But back on topic..your ps not giving enough power to CPU or GPU will just result in a crash or shutdown to protect itself but it will never affect fps performance.
 
well, the 800w and up are tier 2. Not sure about the 600w unit, but at $180 for the 1000w unit, no reason to go smaller.
 
The only decent Ultra psu is their 1kw one. All the others are known to undervolt.
 
I got a cheap ultra x-connect 500w(it was like $40) and I really like it, it's modular, but the cables are really stiff, only down side so far. I've been using it for 3-4 months now, no troubles so far, I don't know how loud it is because my entire comp is really loud, and I like it that way lol.
 
yeah, i had an x-connect 500w a long time ago and that thing had voltages all over the f*cking place...
 
I have an Ultra 1000W X3.....really nice and shiny.
I've had it for 6 weeks, and its powering the computer in my signature.

Last night outta nowhere, message: nvidia whatever thing has noted insufficient power to one of your graphics cards, yadda,yadda............game (HL2,EP1) starts to artifact like crazy, and then I see the BSOD. Yikes......:eek:

Re-booted...............smells awfully alot like used antifreeze..........no magic smoke though.............then BSOD after the power message comes on again.

EKKKKKK! me thinks the PSU has travelled south. Took the cards out, they work fine individually in another computer. No telltale signs of problems elsewhere......so off to see the RMA wizard at Ultra. I hope this is an isolated incident and not the start of a bad experience...........I've always used PCP&C before this, but the price and modularity of the Ultra was too hard to pass up, and it got a great [H] review as well.

I had that PSU, I got it for 2$ after a rebate. Worst 2$ I ever spent.

I, at one point, loved the PSU, and thought other people were making stupid mistakes with them, causing them to fail. Well, mine failed about 3 weeks after the warranty period was up... And it took my board + RAM out with it.

I was only using a 7800GT, and an X2 3800... About 200w loaded from the wall.

11.52V is an undervolt. I was being sarcastic at Retro's generalization. He said they "are known to undervolt."

They don't all undervolt and they're certainly not known for that. His statement is like saying "All Ford's explode into a ball of flames when you rear end them" because he's familiar with the Pinto gas tank incidents.
 
you've obviously never rear-ended a ford explorer either ;)
that being said, all non-X3 ultra psu's are downright dangerous to your hardware (and to your house, in case of fire)

Not quite - some others (X-Pro EE) are Andyson and one is Seventeam (X-Pro 750). Also, IMO the Wintech units aren't quite down to "risk of fire" dangerous, they're just mediocre units. Only the Youngyear X-Connect approaches that special level of crapulence.
 
still though, what about the x2 750? that thing is a sad excuse of a 400w power supply...and do you think the average user is going to know the difference between every single individual model, especially when they are in the same wattage area?

it's time for ultra to just use good manufacturers, instead of occasionally just tossing in a total piece of sh*t.

Well you could say the same about MSI if you read Dan_D's review from today but people don't. They weed through the good and the bad boards from manufacturers.
 
still, the thing tries to pass for a 750w unit, and for what you get it's extremely expensive.

couple that with the fact that tigerdirect has more than a few BBB complaints, and you see what i mean :)
 
Heh, I'm running four Ultras right now, with two V-series units powering low end PCs and a third X-Connect 500 powering a good mid-range rig:

I just purchased the fourth Ultra (another X-Connect 500 from TD for $30, which was to power a build that I wanted everything in silver or chrome. There aren't any other modular PSUs out that match that description, so I have no problems using Ultra units for my gear.

I do think their newer models are not that good, but they did themselves in by dropping some talented employees to make up for all of those $40 PSU - $40 MIRs on the V-series PSUs.
 
Yet another Ultra question if anybody knows the answer:

Will the rounded IDE cables from the X-Connect fit on another Ultra modular such as the X2 with its modular FlexForce cables ? In short, are the cables interchangeable on the Ultra PSUs ?
 
i,ve had a pretty generic ultra 600w psu in my rig for about a year, got it from fry's for cheap after rebate, it's worked fine for me.

All but the 20/24-pin.
 
I called Ultra.....see my prior post.
The guys were very helpful......I got an RMA on the spot; in fact the new X3 arrived yesterday.......

I have been told, that the nVidia sentinel is rather crappy, and may indeed not be compatable with certain PSUs (I did NOT get this info from Ultra, they made no excuses)
sounds like a cousin of ntune.....

so who knows. I have used my original Ultra since I had my problems and it has performed flawlessly with one exception; I did get video artifacts two nights ago, clicked out of the game to a message from nvidia sentinel, rebooted and all was well again.....no problems since.
