Since TigerDirect seems to like to push these on us liek its cocaine, I figured I should see what you guys think. Are they really as bad as people say?

It depends on which Ultra PSU you're talking about. Out of the six Ultra PSUs reviews done on this site, 3 of those were good and the other were just plain bad.
So Ultra is capable of selecting/designing PSUs. But unfortunately most of their PSU lineup are made up of low-quality PSUs built by Win-tech (well not anymore now that Win-Tech is gone) and Yue-Lin.
