UK Will Require Age Verification for Porn Sites in April

The United Kingdom recently passed a law requiring citizens to verify their age before they can access porn sites, and recent reports claim that law will go into effect in April. A spokesperson for the AgeID system designed to enforce the law said "When a user first visits a site protected by AgeID, a landing page will appear with a prompt for the user to verify their age before they can access the site. Each website will create their own non-pornographic landing page for this purpose." Users will have to make an account on the AgeID website before accessing adult content, or purchase a voucher from a brick-and-mortar store in the UK if they don't want to enter an email address. The system's creators claim AgeID is "secure" and doesn't store any user data beyond login credentials and the fact that they're over 18.

lark says, 'When a user registers an AgeID account using an email address and password, both are protected by a salted, one-way hash. This means that at no point does AgeID have a database of email addresses. AgeID does not know the identity or date of birth of its users, all it knows is whether a hashed account is over 18 or not. AgeID has been designed with privacy and security at its core, so much so that we believe we provide the most robust solution available. We look forward to being scrutinised by the BBFC and the auditors of their voluntary certification scheme.'

Third party porn verification?

I guess it’s more restrictive than the age verification system that Steam uses for mature titles where you can open the dropdown for birth year, spin your mouse wheel like the Price is Right wheel then click okay and progress into the title information.

January 01, 1932?

Sure, why not.

Looking forward to this collapsing big time after just a week.

Another company taking UK MPs to the cleaners for taxpayer money.

If it's one thing the Tory party has shown it's their total incompetence at anything.

I skimmed the article, didn't see enough details to explain how this won't be defeated by a kid getting one of these ids bought for him at the store, and they just use it instead of the person that bought it. The one available at stores doesn't require email or any personal details, so what the hell is the point?

3 things will happen:

1) This data will be sold to potential employers as part of a screening process
2) Your porn habits will come into play if you are ever involved in a criminal
3) This information will (eventually) be leaked and you will be blackmailed or your spouse will divorce you or something like that

You would have to be absolutely batshit insane to ever go online without a VPN in this day and age.

You forgot “this information will be used to lower your social score we’re going to introduce like China’s, or Canada’s systems”

MindGeek's solution is called 'AgeID'

Who is 'mind geek'?
MindGeek owns and operates many popular pornographic websites, including video sharing services Pornhub, RedTube, and YouPorn, as well as adult film production companies Brazzers, Digital Playground, Men.com, Reality Kings, and Sean Cody, among others
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MindGeek

Pay to play for the little porn distributes..
Pornographer Pandora/Blake, who has criticized the age verification platform, explained that the government has "written Mindgeek a blank check." "Smaller sites like mine," they argued, "will effectively have to pay a 'Mindgeek tax' to our biggest competitor."
https://www.engadget.com/2017/11/23...fication-ageid-digital-economy-uk-online-porn

What's required..
Pornhub and YouPorn will use the AgeID system, which requires users to prove their age using a credit card, passport, driving licence, or special cards bought from newsagents.
[...]
Clark says, ‘First, a user can register an AgeID account using an email address and password. The user verifies their email address and then chooses an age verification option from our list of 3rd party providers, using options such as Mobile SMS, Credit Card, Passport, or Driving Licence. ‘The second option is to purchase a PortesCard or voucher from a retail outlet. Using this method, a customer does not need to register an email address, and can simply access the site using the Portes app.’

So it sounds like MindGeek hijacked some campaign so they could pivot and force this on everyone over in the UK? Snap. That's crazy long term evil planning.

This is good. Pornography basically causes brain damage. Children get addicted to porn at like age 12. I think porn should be illegal and pornographers should be thrown in jail but at least this might keep children from becoming porn addicts who can't ever form a normal relationship with a woman.

This is good. Had they had age verification for prostitutes in the late 1800s Jack the Ripper would have been caught.

The intention might be good but wait until news outlets publish articles on how perv's are 'criminally' avoiding the age verification legislation by using VPN's.. well, looks like we will have to create a licensing system for VPN's now

btw don't think VPN's are a magic bullet, they typically just kick the can one step down the road from the ISP to another data collector, who increasingly have to abide by similar laws to your ISP. And if your really doing something you shouldn't be, im not sure a VPN is going to protect you as much as you think.

Have worked for a software company that created composite profiles for governments by combining database entries. The opportunities for abuse to this blows my mind.

Couple years and party in power will have a decades long collection of porn preferences on every person say running for office. This combined data can create a psychological profile of you more accurate then you or any family member of you have of you.

Right now the goverment has records of your forgotten addresses, phone numbers, relationships, dr visits, school exams, employment, income, job losses, etc etc.. that you had in the past. This data is already easily combined into a composite character of you. Adding in sexual preferences and history is gas on a fire. The power of social psychologists to create algorthmic profiles should scare the shit out of anyone opposed to authoritarianism.

Understand that like all crowbars of goverment this genie will not go back in the bottle and will only endlessly expand until total collapse.

I believe it was George Carlin, but I love the sentiment (paraphrasing from memory):
"If someone comes and asks you to give up one of your rights, tell them F YOU. Because you will never, ever, get that right back."

This is not precisely true, and to your point, people will eventually get rights back but historically - that involves a lot of bloodshed.

UK arresting people for twitter posts
UK firing teachers for questioning halal meat
UK arresting people for plastic knives
UK arresting people over TV licenses

Now this... what a joke. Before the internet, underage kids still found porn.

And that right there is what is wrong with most legislation in general and 100% of all this bullshit 'morality' legislation. Few people ever consider the potential ramifications or where things may go 3, 10, 20 years from now. Legislation just creates room for more legislation and bigger gov't. Eventually, every aspect of an individuals life will subject to legislation and/or must be submitted for approval.

More despotism given freely by big governments. This leads to the Internet ID down thr road.. guess what this leads to zero anonymity.

It's about time for the EU representatives to go: "stop it, You go now!" at the next Brexit talks. ;-)
