UD Sucks... memory

Well, it's finally happened. I agree with Marty.

I have been running Windows on this machine, despite my efforts to wean myself from it, since January. This being the case, I decided that running UD would be nice; support that half of the [H]orde, that kind of thing. I have 1GB of memory. However, I have found that UD takes an unconscionable amount of memory, and have nowhere to change how much it is allowed. Just some numbers here: with my system at idle, the 5 highest VM-size processes are WCGrid_Rosetta.exe (199888K), firefox.exe (191712K), mcshield.exe (24088K), explorer.exe (22748K), and utorrent.exe (21376K). When I start Guild Wars, it climbs to about 258696K, and everything (and I do mean *everything*) slows to a crawl. Winamp stops responding to keyboard input, Guild Wars runs at 10FPS, Firefox takes several seconds to change tabs. This is not workable.

Thus, I have run into the kind of problem Marty mentions whenever someone asks about turning his machines to UD. Until they put a cap on the memory the UD agent will use, I'm out. Sorry guys.

Keep on folding, one way or another ;)

Well..

1. I never said UD sucked, publicly at least :p
2. Others know far more than I on UD stuff, but one thing I liked on UD was the *low* memory use. I've only seen it use~10 mega or so.

Maybe switching projects as ^^ said would help?

Rosetta is admittedly a huge system hog, compareable to the QMD's (just not quite that intense of memeory requirements). My only problem is, for useful contribution to the project, you need to run both Rosetta and Ligandfit, as the Cancer (Ligandfit) data isn't quite as plentiful as the other.

I said it sucked memory. The ellipsis was just to get attention ;)

On the plus side, maybe that Roo won't eat me for breakfast quite as much :(

Wow, after reading this post, I opened Task Manager to see for myself.

I am not experiencing high memory usage.

Pay no attention to the Macafee process..this is my PC at work :D

EDIT: Just comprehended what the OP was posting about, DOH!

On boxen that can't afford to be slowed down, I run Ligandfit for this reason. I just create different profiles for different boxen.

I have learned that you cannot run guildwars and F@h or UD at the same time, it bogs down your computer that or lags really bad.

On my gaming pc that folds, I have to shut down f@h in order to play GuildWars.

But just running Ligandfit doesn't guarantee maximum memory usage - what if they come out with a new core that takes QMD-like memory sizes, but it's for cancer so it's Ligandfit? I like the idea of server-side profiles, and wish FAH would do the same thing, but FAH's memory limit option should get added to UD.

I have never had a problem with the mem usage on boxen running Ligandfit WU. Never.

That and the option built in to run on more than one CPU/Core at the same time. UD really needs to update the client.

If the history of the industry has shown us anything, it is that processors will go faster, and applications of all kinds will continue to be written to exploit of the local resources of the PC, as if they were the one and only thing that is ever run on it.

For that reason, I try to stay a bit ahead of the curve on my main PC memory-wise. I run 2gb in it. I am absolutely sure that when Vista hits the desktop, 4gb will not be quite as over the top as it might be today.

Something you can do when running something that might compete with the UD client for resources, and push the system into dipping into the system cache (ie...the hard drive), you can always shut down the client for the duration and fire it up again when you are done. Granted, it is an extra step, but it will allow your game to run better, and also allow you to continue running the client.

When gaming or doing anything else that is resoure intensive, I routinely shut down most of the things I see in my system tray, including the virus scanner to maximize performance. I just make damned sure I turn it all back on when I am done.

The point is, there are things that can be done to mitigate the memory-sucking effect, and still allow you to participate in UD. Does the client need to be optimized? Sure! But don't let that be the sole determination of whether or not you run it.

Just another .02 of a dollar from yours truly.

Actually you guys are already lucky. The first versions of Rosetta sucked that amount of memory under the memory usage column, not VM.

Bowing to pressure from the user community they finally changed it so that the VM size is large but with a more manageable memory usage. Basically what it means is that the VM allocation is paged out to disk and they will only use a much smaller subset of that allocation in physical memory during run time, so it won't tie up all memory. I have been paying less and less attention to the VM usage column over the years, because that is less likely to affect the total physical memory available. Use those numbers in conjunction with the Performance tab's "available physical memory" to determine if you are really running low on memory.

Based on your applcation list I would say it is FireFox (it has the same mem and VM amounts!) that may be the main culprit of your swapping. Try list your memory usage column as well.

VM versus memory is a very subtle distinction. Both can be swapped. And even the "available" memory in taskman isn't really all you have - the "system cache" can be thrown out at almost any time, since it's a cache of things already on disk.

As for the memory column, it's GW (330M), Firefox (120M) and everything else is under 15M. FAH is taking under 15M for both of its processes together.

And well you should. If they should tomorrow decide that they want to roll out big WUs, it's you that takes the blame. :(

Have you tried disabling the VM columns? Hear no evil, see no evil... ;)

j/k

Frankly, running and DC program on a production/corp. box is a stupid idea in my opinion. Yea, I'm one to talk huh.

Home use different, do what ever you want. UD taking too much memory for your liking, switch.

Since I am front line support as well as admin over these boxen....there is no blame to be had.
:)

A combination of a bit of swapping and utorrent sucking a lot of I/O cycles may be more of a culprit here. I have an AXP box with 1GB of RAM, Rosetta, NAV2K3 (less of a hog I suppose), FireFox, Thunderbird, ICQ, MSN and Civ 4 and it is still smooth. But my swap file is on a second drive though, so my I/O is pretty smooth as always. :p

My take is that even Rosetta WUs take up more gobs of memory than LigandFit, it should still be manageable with their changes last year to shove the stuff to VM instead of requiring all the pages in memory at once. If not, then you do need to specify LigandFit only, which I did when I still had my Pentium 200 MMX crunching.

i have run this:
Firefox (with one of those huge pagefile sizes you get from opening certain threads in the anime section)
2 copies of F@H - normal and a timeless, cause of how my internet is set up
utorrent
nod32
winamp
Game - Guild Wars, NFS:MW, etc... no problems i couldn't fix by using a better video card.

system:
axp @ 2.3
1gb ram
maxtor diamondmax 9 everything runs off of, including swap
seagate 7200.7 i have stuff on

haven't tried UD on my main box. on my other box (linux) it is taking 11.7mb mem and 18mb vm liganfitting. so you may wanna try that.

the black knight always triumphs!
