Hello guys, im about 15 mins away from biting the bullet on a dell u2711 and sli 3gb 580's
i know i wont be able to get max some games at native res 2560 x 1440, and was wondering if i can play in 1080p on the monitor for those games? will i loose quality alot of quality?
will it still look good? also this is a noob question, but will the fps increase when playing in 1080p? thanks for the help in advance guys, Luke.

Yes you can play in 1080p, yes it will be blurry as hell.

But if your SLIing two 580's your gonna be good to go lol. I have a single HD6950 2gb and I can play Crysis 2 and Skyrim pretty much maxed out at very playable frame-rates at 1440p. I do have to turn off AA, but at this resolution AA is unnecessary IMO.

It would be better to play games without anti-aliasing than to play at 1080p resolution, because this monitor has such a high/sharp dot-pitch it will likely look a heck of a lot better.

Hmmm, have you seen any reviews with this monitor and sli 3gb 580's i cant seem to find any :/ ? bit worried ill get crap fps at this res, would be ideal if 1080p worked tbh :/ thanks, Luke

I'm in the same boat as you, well sort of. I have 6970's in crossfire and I'm looking at the U2711 or the U3011. I was initially concerned about the big res bump too but it isn't a problem. 580SLI or 6970CF will handle this monitor without issue. You'll have a hard time finding a lot of reviews for 2560x1440 but just looks at 2560x1600 performance and expect to get 3-5% better FPS. There are a lot of of 580 SLI reviews around.

SLI 580's will destroy a single 1440p display, even Metro will run fine. Look at the 1600p FPS..

That said stay as far away from the 2711 as possible and get the Apple Cinema Display or Samsung S27A850D

I had to return my U2711 due to the hideous AG, and no, I didn't know anything about AG at the time. I was simply comparing to my old monitor (ironically also a Dell Ultrasharp, a TN from 2005, but with a much cleaner picture by comparison). It was only after getting on here and reading about others' experiences that I even understood what the problem was.

So yeah, I had no formed prejudice, but I couldn't stand it. It was like trying to see the screen through a coating of oil dusted with rainbow sand. Graphics editing is one of my pastimes, and it was so bad I couldn't tell the difference between the coating and actual image artifacts, nor could I be sure of color accuracy. It also gave me headaches looking at it too long.

Dell gave me a hell of a runaround about returning it too. Took months for them to give me my money back. Never again. My plan now is to buy a Samsung SA850. Backlight issues notwithstanding, at least I know it'll have a clear picture.

My Dell U2711 (which I sold) and Dell 3011 at work had a very similar AG coating. It was barely tolerable on the 30" because of the bigger dot pitch, but I just couldn't deal on the 27" with its smaller text. I use the monitors for coding, so I'm staring at text all the time... it was really unacceptable. Sparkles everywhere. I had a Dell 2407WFP, which I think is a PVA panel, and it was not nearly as bad... not bad at all actually. I'm not sure why companies "need" to put such aggressive coatings on these monitors.

I've switched to Apple Cinema Displays because they have extremely good color quality and response time and no horrendous coating. You just need to be a little careful how you position them because of the glare...

I refuse to buy any monitor that uses LG's aggressive AG coating, and I RMAed my POS U3011 for that exact reason. The entire screen looked like it was caked in crystals. Granted, this may not bother some people which is fine, but for me personally a display panel that looks like a mineral farm is absolutely not acceptable. Unfortunately, that disqualifies almost every LG IPS monitor on the market.

good job, the apple screen has a real slow response rate :/ just checked out the specs and a few reviews :/

Response times listed in the specs don't mean anything. Response times are pretty much equal amongst all the 27" 1440p displays but the Apple Cinema display does not have any input lag due to the lack of a scaler.
