The hot topic of the day is the announcement that visitors to the United States are now required to register online. Are you for this? Against this? Hit the comments link below and share your thoughts.

Starting Monday, travelers from the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Australia, and a host of other countries will have to register online with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security before they can travel into the United States.

Well it's really not that much different from being required to register for a visa to enter another country.

I'm a Canadian who has worked in the U.S. here and there, and I've had to register online with DHS (Department of Homeland Security). It's not much of a hassle, takes about 10 min to fill the form.

I've had to register, no biggie.

I guess it does beat paper and cuts down on time.

How does this stop mexicans from crossing the border and terrorists from boarding planes? Can't people give fake backgrounds?

It's cool to live in the U.S.S.A comrades.

Sighs, higher security measures and more invasions of privacy.

All for the FALSE sense of security, and more pork in the "security" barrel. Stupidity at its best.

You had to register before, the "news" item is not correct.
They just changed the registration method from last-minute-at-the-airport or - if you were on a business trip - written permit by the embassy to an online system.
It still can take a few days until you are cleared, but since you can now register in advance, the chance of being rejected or being told to bring additional documents before your flight takes place is greater than before - some travellers were rejected at the airport, for others the response took so long that they missed their flight.

Still, one thing buggers me a lot: all airlines carrying passengers into the US have to provide shitloads of data on them to the DHS, yet not one country over here stood up and demanded the same from them. Do we really automatically assume that no terrorists will fly from the US to Europe?

So in some way the fundamentalists have already won the war: Look at the western world ten years ago and look at it now - and mourn all the freedom we have lost. And weep for the ignorant ones who sense the false security the governments promise to us is worth the reduction and ultimately the elimination of everything that was held high by previous generations:
Liberty, freedom, unlimited possibilites - these words will be but a shallow whisper in the future nanny states where human beings give up their ability to think for themselves at the crib.
Needing instructions on a package of toothpicks, or sings to tell you that coffee is hot - how far has manking degraded already?

I meant: The chance of KNOWING that you have been rejected or need to bring... etc...

So basically, they are just de facto ending the visa waiver program?

Sure makes my job harder.
Not to mention the pay raise...

Toothpick instructions FTW! This one time I had an itch on my eyeball and I reached for a toothpick to scratch it, thank god for the directions, I found out I was using the wrong tool! So I picked up my steak knife instead.............

/sarcasm

This solves nothing. I feel less safe doing this, fearing what your government will do with that information.

It makes the feds safer, and the citizens/visitors more in peril from the feds.

I am not in favor of this whatsoever.

So does that mean that people will have to register online AND get a visa also or just one or the other? Is it also a one-time thing or anytime you have to fly to the US?

"..gives authorities more time to screen for threats and ensure that a traveler isn't a known security risk," he said."

IF SUCH A PERSON IS A KNOWN SECURITY RISK DO YOU THINK HIS PRESENCE WOULD NOT HAVE ALREADY BEEN KNOWN? WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH YOUR GOVERNMENT?

Now Tom Hanks will be able to use subsidized, public PC's at the airport terminal.

Good on ya, gov't.

i live in central europe and i'm SO glad that there are other places in the world that i can visit. the department of homeland security can <insert profanity here>. is there no limit to mistrust against foreigners? i can understand that people from certain countries need to undergo this kind of crap, but that's just pure paranoia.

how many terror attacks have actually been prevented and how many terrorists were cought? using how many billions of dollars? i guess i can't understand this as an unpure non-american. i'm not flaming americans, i know a few and like them. it's just the terror paranoia that really needs to settle down at some point. no matter how many resources you throw at the problem there are still hundreds of ways you can attack infrastructure and people. there's just so much you can attack and too many flaws in any security system you can think of.

It would be a lot cooler without 20 million illegal aliens.

If not for those 20 million illegals you would probably be harvesting crops 24/7 and cleaning toilets right about now. Of course you could always say that it allowed you to buss the tables of some really hot chicks.

"Any society that would give up a little security to gain a little liberty will deserve neither and lose both"

How on earth did we ever manage to clean toilets and pick crops before?!

How on earth did we ever manage to clean toilets and pick crops before?!

By making a lot less money than we do now. The fact of the matter is that because those jobs are held already it allows natural born citizens to pursue better jobs and higher education. Furthermore illegals work hard at what they do, unlike my neighbors who do not work and collect welfare while not even looking for a job...bowl oriented or not.

He may know I suspect he is an expert in the area of toilets...

The answer is we had a guest worker program that worked and allowed for legal workers to pick and go home and some to become citizens… but hey something like that is to rational and not as stupid as letting tens of millions of illegal aliens break the law by definition, depress wages for EVERYBODY, abuse social service meant for CITIZENS, drive up violent crime rates 30%, ect...

The bogus who clean toilets and pick crops BS is an argument used by the intellectually lazy or by those who are silly enough to want open borders.

the thing is man...this is the way our gov't wants it. It's just a sham to remove civil liberties and keep the populace in a constant state of fear and uneasiness. There are no significant terrorists. But it sure makes a handy excuse for data collection. Thats why protection isn't where it should be. And why things like the domestic terrorist act are in place.

It's no longer about terrorism under the surface, which is why i'm against all these things. It's all a scam. It's about money for them, loss of liberties for the citizens, and scapegoats when necessary for the non americans...and well for americans too.

I remember going to canada last year, it was great, Canadian at the border was reading some video game magazine, asked me who i was, took a brief glance at my drivers license, asked what i was up to and sent us through, maybe 5 minutes. That's how it should be.

So in some way the fundamentalists have already won the war: Look at the western world ten years ago and look at it now - and mourn all the freedom we have lost.

You hit the nail on the head there. Their plan worked beyond their wildest dreams. We're stuck in not one, but two quagmires of a war, we've given away more rights than people realize, and we're no more secure than we were 10 years ago. With less than 20 people and a few million dollars, they've cost this country billions, if not trillions of dollars, and divided this country up and pitted us against ourselves, if only ideologically for the time being. Hopefully it never becomes physical.

Lol you think the illegals will actually sign this?

Sarcasm is wasted on some… :)

The point was actually address a real problem and real security threat like illegal immigration should be a priority.

People need to pay attention to what is going on in northern Mexico right now. It is safer to be an Iraqi in Iraq than a Mexican in northern Mexico and has been for months… the country is falling apart in slow motion and if we do not get control of our southern border is will spread here.

What a load of crap. Do you live in a border town?

I love reading these political posts online because a vast majority of the commenters think that since they have some technical knowledge and experience in related fields, they also must have a grasp on the realities of the world. "Protect our liberties!" If I see that Ben Franklin quote one more time I'm going to vomit. The two responses that appear the most on the interwebs have to be "look at all the liberties we've lost the last ten years" and "terrorists don't exist." It's funny because both references are Bush-bashing, and both are also false for most intents and purposes. I don't know what liberties you all have lost the last ten years; I don't recall losing any myself. Hmm, let me see... yeah, nope.

I certainly don't live fear, and I live my life today the same I lived it ten years ago, with the exception of some economy-related decisions. What's really odd though coming from the "liberty" commenters is that they seriously think people like myself (conservatives) fear terrorists to the point we'd sacrifice anything to stay "safe." The only people I've ever met that actually trust the government and its ability to do for the people are liberals, and none that I've met are in favor of anything remotely restrictive on the rights of terrorists (see closing Gitmo/Constitutional rights for detainees). What fifth dimension do you people live in?

Quite possibly the person may not know that he is being watched. For instance why would you send someone to the US who you know is being watched or has a criminal record. It's the people who don't know they're being watched is who we, err I mean the intel community is interested in.

I am from europe and I hate thïs useless BS - you give so much data to another government and when you arrive some bureaucrat at the airport can send you back without any reason....

Also chance of beeing killed by terrorist is what 0.00001% or less? I have no problem with such risk if I get my liberties back. Its absurd how much we have to sacrifice to gain little security and MAYBE save few people - its like installing wiretap in every phone because criminals may use them or installing camera in every car so we can catch everyone who drive too fast....

QFT !!!!!

This is one of those arguments where if something happening people would be like WTF, why don't we have people register online before they get here?

Reaction is always slower than action, unless you're Bruce Lee. :D

Would technically have to be USSSA ...
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Union of Soviet Socialist States of America
