Those of you that have been waiting for wireless USB to hit retail now have your choice of two laptops to choose from.

Dell's Inspiron 1720 notebook and Lenovo's ThinkPad T61 and T61p models are the first PCs to receive certification for the standard, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) is expected to announce Monday. Texas-based WiQuest Communications makes the Wireless USB chipset in both notebooks.

Neat, does this mean Bluetooth will die a quick death? :p

On a related note - how would you go about using powered devices like USB hard drives or flash drives? I don't think you could make many USB devices fully wireless since you'd still need to plug them into something for power (until wireless power works better).

I'm curious how many amps they can pull with that. 0.5?

That would allow external 2.5" HDDs, input devices, speakers/headphones, even some of the new mobile printers.

I'd buy it :)

I just can't wait for my wire free desktop. Plugging in the machine and monitor is fine, but I would gladly replace all my peripherals if I could get rid of all the wires.

That's where this comes in...

I just love it when old tech becomes new again.

there is just something about wireless power that bothers me. I don't give too much credit to the people who blame cell phones for brain cancer or WIFI networks for other problems. These are very low wattage devices, but they haven't been around long enough to guarantee that they cause absolutely no problems.

But how many watts of radio power must these things put out to be able to charge devices? It is going to be a hell of a lot more than what a cell phone puts out even at max power. I don't know if I would want those adapters pumping radio waves into me 24/7 just so I don't have to plug in a wire.

The only thing I would really use a wireless charger for anyway is my cell phone and I just plug that in every night like most people I know do. For most things (like keyboard and mice) I prefer to have a good wired version over the wireless, I still prefer to use PS/2 for my keyboard. Oh well; even if I don't like it, I know plenty of people who would buy this.
