Right now I'm using a cable modem hooked up to my D-Link (DL-524) router. This goes into my desktop, and I use the router for wireless internet with my laptop.

Anyway, I want to move my router and modem upstairs to where my laptop is and not use my laptops wireless internet, but instead plug the ethernet (is that right?) cord into my laptop.

I would then like to stick another ethernet cord into my D-link, feed it downstairs and into my desktop.

Can all this be done?

Here's a pic of what I'm trying to do:

Yes. As long as your cable modem's coaxial cable can reach upstairs and you have a way to getting the ethernet cable from your router to the desktop, that is doable.
