Two bad memory sticks?

I recently bought an Asus Z77-V LK MB and 8 GB Patriot Gamer 2 Series DDR3 1600 RAM and got everything put together. It seems like I'm having problems with both memory sticks. I have tested them separately in different slots on the MB and both throw errors in Memtest86+. Isn't it really rare to have two bad sticks of memory? Could it be something with the MB or even the CPU? Isn't the memory controller on the CPU now? When I first booted it, one of the sticks wasn't fully seated, but then I turned it off and seated the memory.
 
Not really rare. Yes the memory controller is on the CPU. However you really can't tell if it's a mobo or CPU issue until you test that RAM in another PC.
 
Find some other ram to put in the board and test it out. The odds that both sticks are dead are very slim.
 
Thanks guys. I got another stick of memory that's a different brand and it's made it through one pass of memtest so far. I'll let it run for a couple more passes but at this point it looks like both sticks were bad. Interesting.
