Twitter, Facebook Attack Targeted One User

You know you are popular when DDoS attacks aimed at you take down Twitter and Facebook. Most of us just have a hard enough time getting followers and friend invites.

A Georgian blogger with accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google's Blogger and YouTube was targeted in a denial of service attack that led to the site-wide outage at Twitter and problems at the other sites on Thursday, according to a Facebook executive.

I would actually be worried if I was the guy targeted - if someone out there has the ability to organize a large enough DDoS to take down those sites, they must be really angry and have some kind of power. Not like BillyBob from nowhere has the power to take those sites down..

I bet he (the targeted one) orchestrated this attack himself. He probably slipped a file to every computer that looked at any of his pages on those sites and then yesterday activated it by pointed all the machines at his pages so that he would look like the victim and he would know that it had worked.

You could be on to something there. It might not have been an attack--he might have been trying to gather user information from Twitter, Facebook, etc. and bit off more than the tubes could chew.

Either that, or he's the most hated man on useless technology.

The targeted person is a somewhat controversial Georgian blogger, linked to a separatist region of Georgia, the same country which had a (civil-ish) war not too long ago. I think it's far to say that there may be a lot of people who may want to silence him.

Of course, so far it seems like they just put the spotlight on this formerly quite unknown blogger. Ah well

Nah you had it the other way around. The blogger is pro-Georgian and doesn't want another separation of another province from Georgia. He condemned Russian actions in South Ossetia before. Actually it might be safe to say that Russians did it. Remember the Estonian cyber attacks? They happened after the Estonian government announced plans to remove USSR-era statues and relics in the country (and also because they're getting "closer" to the EU rather than Russia).
