I'm trying to find out some stuff about a TV Tuner Card, because my apartment is kinda small, and I would like to use my computer monitor for TV and console games if possible.

I realize I probably should have just gotten a flat panel TV, since they usually have an S-Video or DVI input anymore, but I've had this monitor for about a year and I don't see the point in spending money I don't need to.

I was looking at the ATI TV Wonder 200 at the store today, and typical of the register biscuits that I have to deal with, I couldn't ask any of them for what I needed.

It has RCA inputs, as well cable in, 125 channel tuner, and a bunch of other stuff that I'm not terribly curious about. I would like to know if I can plug my Xbox or PS2 into this, and use my monitor to play video games.

Anybody have some information? Even a suggestion of some other card you might like better?

It's outdated, but it'll work. I'd suggest picking up a used Hauppauge PVR150 for under $40, or a Theater 550 (ATI) for the same range. The image quality should be better, and it'll have hardware encoding to save your processor.

And no, you wouldn't be able to hook up a console to ANY TV tuner- encoding it into a format your computer could handle involves a minimum of half-second lag.
 
Go for a Hauppage TV tuner... There are some for around 99$-199$.

From my experience, the AIW cards just have a BIT of lag in them, making it hard to play many games on.

Also, they're not the best for picture quality :).
 
The Hauppage tuners will be the best bet if you're going to watch TV for sure, but you'll have no luck hooking up your console to it. You can do it, but the lag between action on game-pad and what is displayed on screen will be too great.

Since all the "good" PVR cards like the Hauppage ones use a hardware encoder, you get that transient lag.

The ATI card has no hardware encoder, so you /should/ be able to play your console effectively through the card.
 
With a VIVO card, couldn't you just connect a VCR w/Tuner to the VI and watch TV that way?
 
I have the ati tv wonder 650 and love it. It is an all around card, such as radio, anolog(cable or antenna), and HDTV. It is a little price, but the features are hard to beat.

Do you experience any lag while playing a console through it?
 
sorry if I'm bringing a dead thread back to life, but what I meant with this is just to have a pass-through that will change the signal from Component Video into VGA.

does anyone know of a gizmo that's just an RCA to VGA adapter? I could survive with manually switching.
