We’ve seen a ton of stories about people losing items with very important information on it, but losing a drive containing information on over 100,000 Homeland Security employees is a pretty big deal.

Authorities realized Thursday the hard drive was missing from a controlled area at TSA headquarters. TSA Administrator Kip Hawley sent a letter to employees Friday apologizing for the lost data and promising to pay for one year of credit monitoring services.

how in the world do you loose a drive from a secured area? something like this should be on/in a computer that should be a lot harder to get at than it seems that it was.

treason through negligence in my opinion. firing squad.

QFT. I wonder which department will be next to lose a laptop, hard drive, disk(s) or anything else that contains sensitive information?

Yes, typical Bushie fkup.

Now Al Kyda, remember ole Al? Now Al has the ID of 100,000 TSA empoyee's, so they can go bonk some on the head, take thier place and allow more Al's through the security at the airport. Just like a James Bond episode.

Our government, and all republican's, cannot even SPELL the word security, let alone provide it for any purpose.

Where's OddJob when you need him? :p

Being one of the people who are effected by this I got an email Friday night telling us about this. According to the email it was a removable hard disk that was lost.

I still don't get why all this sensitive info is stored on a removable hard drive

I've stopped being surprised by these- they keep happening, and it seems with increasing frequency. I'm curious what sensitive information was doing on a removable drive. I can probably understand it to some extent, but that also means it should have some additional encryption or fail-safes on it...

Makes me feel REAL safe when something can go missing from a CONTROLLED area at TSA headquarters.......

Not that I am a fan of bush, but even I think this commentary is uncalled for.

Now, this is getting me seriously P.O.'ed now. Every single week I see another one of these instances where important information has been 'lost' by government or corporations.

What is with these people? Are they so incompetent that they don't think before they do things or throw out things anymore?

when i am king, incompetence and ignorance and arrogance will be capitol offenses.

its called a secure network. but that would require semi-current technology. and that would take money away from valuable things like useless agencies and pork projects.

So true. The legislators got $$$ for pork projects but govt employee/sensitive data takes a back seat...

Hey, if people want to interject irrelevant political commentary into every discourse, let them.

Besides, all this fuss. It's probably sitting on the floor underneath the desk.

Or in the hands of terrorists. Either way, they're getting a year's worth of free credit reports courtesy of us! 100,000 X $5 per month X 12 months = only $6 million dollars. Yay!

It isn't "unrelated" political commentary. This is just another example of what happens when you populate all the positions above civil servant with worthless PoS political HACKs.

Every Dept in the govt has been populated by hundreds of HACKs and in the areas where it matters we get actual bad things happening.... like poisoned food supply not caught by the FDA, or countless security FKups by the TSA, the list is too long to go over.

By "Bushie" it means Bush administration political HACK.

Putting people unqualified into seriously important positions leads to disaster. That's OK by the administration, since GOVERNMENT is a bad thing, the worse it functions the better for the party line.

This is just another example of the ramifications.

I like the free credit watch.... but the LAW (FCRA) doesn't provide for what is really needed so now. Which is a credit FREEZE so noone can obtain your credit report OR obtain credit of anykind in YOUR NAME without YOUR DIRECT APPROVAL. The credit watch will only let youo know the badguys are stealing your identity.... it wont PREVENT IT from happening.

The TJX Corp scandel is alot worse than this, and they should have to pay the $69 for a year of credit watch per victim as well.... $69 x 200 MILLION victims.... that would teach corporate america a real lesson. FKup and you DIE a financial death.

I didn't say it was unrelated (as your quote marks seem to indicate), I said it was uncalled for

How does this have ANYTHING to do with the President?

President bush was the man behind starting the "Department of Homeland Security"

His organization, DHS, is the organization whose employees are compromised

The thing that bothers me is
DHS = DEPARTMENT of HOMELAND SECURITY
KGB = COMMITTEE for STATE SECURITY
You can even hear it being said in russian
Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti
In the Russian mindset .. "State" is like saying "Motherland" or "homeland"
and.. well.. a committee, and a department = pretty much a "group of people" right?

Ever wonder why we are such good friends with Russia now? Because we want their ideas for controlling the population. Unfortunately, nobody in power has heard that saying "Those who forget their history are destined to repeat it" - See.. Russia went to hell. Long lines to wait for food (Ever been to a starbucks?), the people agreeing to spy on their own neighbors, etc.. Sound familiar?

I always thought that the KGB, what, with their wiretapping, detaining of citizens with no declared reason, torturous interrogation, and secret prisons was a bad thing

Ooops.. I'm sorry, I linked to articles discussing how WE have those things, not russia!

On September 20, 2001, in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, President George W. Bush announced the establishment of an Office of Homeland Security (OHS) to coordinate "homeland security" efforts, to be headed by Governor Tom Ridge with the title of Assistant to the President for Homeland Security. The name is reminiscent of the British WW2-era Department of Home Security. The official announcement stated:

"The mission of the Office will be to develop and coordinate the implementation of a comprehensive national strategy to secure the United States from terrorist threats or attacks. The Office will coordinate the executive branch's efforts to detect, prepare for, prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from terrorist attacks within the United States.

That's your verification that BUSH was responsible for DHS being formed, in case you want to deny it.

Is bush directly responsible for this data loss? Of course not, but the other guys point was that it's a department of "Bushies" who is responsible.

Or do you think Al Gore, John Kerry, or Clinton caused this to happen?

We're really not here to have a political debate gentlemen. Let's please stick to the topic at hand.

QFT.

The political nuts should find themselves somewhere else to spam their unbelievably incorrect conspiracy theories.

Meh I don't care what you say :-p

Really I don't. As for securing information on portable drives people are right if you are dealing with sensitive information they need to take more care of that information. Most likely someone misplaced it in their desk or something or at least I hope they did. I think as time goes one you will see this happening more and more. Its only been recently that things like huge thumb drives and portable disks became really cheap. So all these networks where information is encrypted on the main machine people will download info to their thumb drives and what not for ease of access and that won't be encrypted because no one really planned for it. But now they should be taking steps to prevent these sort of things. I know that TSA was moving towards encrypting information on the portable drives as well as the clients but we didn't get there yet. Like any government organization everything moves at a snail pace though.

Maybe we should take this as a hint on how effective the TSA and their absolutely silly restrictions are on keeping ``our skies safe''?

That's for sure. My brother flies alot for sales, and says its the goofiest bunch of reg's and hassles imaginable. All make work nonsense.

Meantime they still allow CARGO and mail to be carried by passenger planes.... none of which is checked. The airlines apprently can't make it as a business without that added revenue.

Well I say let'em die off, but prohibit anything but carryon and checked bagged and xray/sniff all of it. THAT is SECURITY. If some of the airlines aren't viable businesses its time to let'em go under. Somebody (Southwest) will manage to survive and thrive.

Inspect EVERY container cargo container that enters the country (imagine actually ending 99% of drug smuggling as a side-effect, what a concept).

Seal the border... fences and minefields and 40,000 troops... thats 3 shifts 24/7 of one soldier per 1/4 mile from the Gulf to the Pacific.
