So last week I bought a captivate off of CL, new and such. Installed cyanogen7, then serendipity and finally running Cognition5 v2. Prior I had a Samsung Focus wtih 7.5 RTM and before that, all iphones. Right now Im finding that the Captivate seems like its the worst phone I've had. The browser is clunky and some features are not as intuitive. Is there a rom you guys recommend? I love my Focus the most but the essential apps I need (maps for bus), browser and some others were VERY clunky not to mention the huge battery drain. The iphone4 had the best usability for me of the bunch but im trying to give the captivate a shot since my upgrade will be around the corner. Anything you guy's recommend?

I have a cappy with cog4 on it, I got fed up with it for all those reasons and because the stock email app sucked. I switched to iphone. The cap always seems so sluggish even with the supposed lagfix. And GPS pretty much doesn't work for anyone unless you are in space standing on the satellite.

I heard the captivate sucks and you should pretty much avoid it. I switched to an Atrix and like it. Wife went from a quick message phone to an Inspire and liked it as well.

did you OC it at all? maybe that will fix it a bit....

as Zero82z said the stock browser is pretty bad......

Try CM 6.* ?

welcome to android, seems like you know what to do. The biggest advantage of android is that you can flash roms, but they are all the same crap. If a phone is no good from the box then there is no way in fixing it. Nothing to see there move on to a new phone.

Perhaps you would feel more comfortable with MIUI? http://miuiandroid.com/

EDIT: As for browsers, give Opera Mobile a shot. Dolphin HD, although frequently recommended, pretty much sucks. It's cluttered, poorly designed - a classic "shove everything in we can wherever it will fit" UI built by engineers. It also uses the stock browser's rendering engine, so performance is the same anyway.

I like the Dolphin HD as my default browser, but is there any good gps apps out there? The one that my inspire comes with sucks. And btw, I'm not running sense. I'm using Go Launcher instead.

CoPilot or Google Navigation are your best bets.

OP, you're being too vague to give any useful advice.

There's NO WAY IN HELL I would ever load a Chinese-made OS, no matter how 'pretty'. Wouldn't be surprised if it were a backdoor haven.

LMAO. You make me laugh.

I don't use MIUI but I have it loaded on my wife's phone. Not my cup of tea, but I can see the appeal. It's one of the more popular ROM's out there so I doubt all the tinfoil hat backdoor's exist.

Plus go check out the new MIUI phone, the MI-ONE.

Hah, the standard "I use it therefore it's ok" response, even though you have no clue what could be hiding in the source code.

Guess these type of concerns are wholly unfounded, eh?

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/aug/16/computer-labs-parts-raise-spy-concerns/

Your link is about government agencies using Chinese built network hardware. A helluva lot different from an Android ROM and one instance where you really do have to second guess someones thought process. However, that doesn't mean the hardware is actually infected with anything. It simply means you need to be extra cautious if you go that route to ensure security.

In the world of Android and the development community MIUI would never have taken off because it would have been discovered if it was backdooring people. That's why I don't worry about MIUI.

With your tin foil hat mentality you might as well stay stock because ANY ROM could have bad code in it. You don't know the developers cooking up those ROMs. Not all of them release source code. They could have an evil vendetta.

Nice, I was figuring you'd also point out the reason that ROMs are also suspect, even moreso a Chinese-made one where their government is highly likely to be involved in the background.

Pass.

The Cyanogenmod 7.1 nightlys are pretty speedy on my Desire Z. I didn't care for the default "ADW Launcher" though and switched it back to the stock Gingerbread launcher. If the gingerbread keyboard isn't your thing, try out the HTC IME keyboard it's pretty decent.

You should avoid all custom ROMs then.

lol, the chances the Chinese government is involved with MIUI is laughably small. The far more likely and valid concern is that just plain ol' malicious people are modifying the ROM to harvest information. Those people are certainly not isolated to China.

So we can both speculate, albeit one of us throwing caution to the wind.

I have some white powder you can sniff from China, they packaged it extremely well and told me it was safe. Go ahead, have some. No need to test it or know anything about its production.

CoPilot or Google Navigation are your best bets.

I recently switched to the droid side, and coming from iphone, google navigation is amazing, especially when in a new city!

I'm amused at the MIUI paranoia. Thousands of people love it and run it on XDA, and believe me they've run all kinds of tcp sniffers to see what kind of traffic it generates. There are no backdoors, its simply the most polished and complete Android rom. The only thing missing is 4g support.

I'm amused at how many people lack common sense; ffs you're taking up for a *Chinese* ROM which copies the shit out of iOS, but how dare anyone question their integrity

Give CoPilot a shot. It's only $5 and you can load maps on to the phone so a data connection isn't required. 99% of the time I use Google Maps but CoPilot has come in handy a few times in areas without cell reception.

OH DEAR GOD NO! They skinned the OS! HTC, Samsung, and Motorola must all be hunted and shot as well because they skin the OS as well!

I found motorola media manager for my mac which let me copy podcasts to the atrix. It's a copy and not a sync so it doesn't save my place on the podcast. However the included music app doesn't even see the podcasts on the atrix. I went through 5 different media player until I found one that sees the podcasts. However the episodes from the different shows are just jumbled together. That isn't going to work. I need to keep them organized by show first with the episodes listed for that show.

I also need to figure out how to get my ebooks on it.

The biggest issue i'm seeing with android thus far is a lack of one centralized desktop application for syncing data to and from, similar to itunes. That would make my life much easier.

I'd never load a random third-party OS period... :). Backdoor havens in and of themselves, potentially. As far as Android itself, I love my HTC Incredible, which I've owned since it came out... stock browser, etc. etc. work great for me.

And the fact that it is a bunch of Chinese devs instead of American devs or European devs matters why? Are you racist or something? You do realize you're using a Chinese device right this very second, right?

This isn't about integrity, this is about not being a tin-foil hat wearing nutjob. Yes, it won't sell here in the US because it would be in violation of tons of patents, but that goes for a *lot* of fan created work. The game mod community runs into this all the freaking time - does that mean mods are filled with backdoors that communicate to the Chinese government? Of course not, that's just silly.

It's amazing how paranoid you are.

i say try the inspire, ive liked every htc phone ive used except for the thunderbolt due to battery life.

I had a fascinate and it was a crappy phone otb but after a custom rom and kernal it was one of the best phones ive ever used

It's amazing how paranoid you are.

It's not paranoia, it's obvious, basic precaution. It's not being paranoid when someone actually may be out to get you! :p Sounds like you're a little bit TOO trusting of people ;).

I had a Craptivate & it was the worst investment ever for me. This thread is amusing with the paranoia on MIUI. I believe MIUI is one of the most customized UI's out there. Never could get into though. Too much work to make it not look like an iOS but that is IMHO. But on a serious note, try Gaia GPS.

Seriously... you do not have to like Android, iOS, or WP7. They all have their pros and cons.

Just figure out which phone's hardware is right for you and how well it operates.

Can it make phone calls?
Can it keep your calls from dropping?
Can it make text messages and how easy is it to make text messages?
Can it sent media messages and how easy is that?
Can it go online and how is the online browsing experience?
Do it do anything else you want it to do? Games? Calendar? Notes? Etc...
Is the phone stable? Does it crash? Does it require syncing to a computer?
How long does the battery last?

It's not paranoia, it's obvious, basic precaution. It's not being paranoid when someone actually may be out to get you! :p Sounds like you're a little bit TOO trusting of people ;).

Touche...haha.

But seriously. The guys over at XDA know what they're doing. MIUI is a very popular rom. There is even an English build, developed in the US I think.

Sad thing is most of the underlying code is apparently from CyanogenMod. For example the 1.6.x build on my wife's Dinc is a 2.3.4 build running a CM kernel. When I see that it makes me think the MIUI devs pull the code directly from CM's github and merge it with their framework to give it to the iOS look.

It matters immensely when the Chinese government meddles in *every* aspect of Chinese life. You'd have to just about be a vegetable to discount the allure of the Chinese goverment being able to control a small dev team which is *already* known to pirate everything they can get their hands on. Throwing up the racism card was cute though.

As a previous poster alluded, caution and paranoia aren't even in the same ball park in this regard. It's just common sense to be cautious of a devteam which is already using questionable methods.

Nonetheless, this is you guys ranting about how it looks without giving a shit about security:

MIUI is based on the AOSP framework, and the closest thing to AOSP that's released on such a wide scale is CM. So basically, MIUI is CM, while replacing the entire /system folder. Much more than a theme, but the framework relies on CM.

Haha, this post's picture is spot on... fools and their money/info/privacy/bank logins are soon parted! :p

It is probably because Android is half-ass compared to Windows Phone 7 or iOS. I know loads of people in your situation. Some people don't mind Android, but you seem to have standards though, so I suggest slugging it out until a new WP7 or iPhone 5 come out in a few months.

Uh, false logic there. If MIUI is based off of AOSP, then it has nothing to do with CM. Just because CM is based off of AOSP doesn't mean everyone AOSP-based ROM uses CM. There are plenty of ROMs that use absolutely nothing from CM.

No, no, you're paranoid. The chinese government is controlling, yes, but they don't have THAT many people that they stick their fingers into every little dev group out there, just like the NSA isn't running around asking every dev group to put backdoors into their programs.

You are talking about regular ol' nonsense. Is it possible that MIUI has malware on it? Abso-fucking-lutely. If it does, would it have anything to do with the government? Almost certainly not. The vast, vast majority of malware out there is unrelated to any government entity. Especially with the Chinese government, which has no reason to waste their time placing backdoors into devices to spy on people when they literally have an iron grip over all the communication lines, and can just demand information from their people.

Nonetheless, this is you guys ranting about how it looks without giving a shit about security:

I'm not ranting, I'm mocking. You're the one paranoid about the Chinese government spying on you (which, let's face it, they couldn't give two shits what you do on your phone).

If you want *actual* security, DO NOT RUN A CUSTOM ROM.
