Okay guys, one of my friends contacted me this weekend and asked for help. Both him and his dad want to play BF4 together, but their machines aren't quite up to the task. His machine is a newer 1156 build while his dad has a C2Q. The idea is to upgrade the 1156 machine a little and give it to his dad, and build him something a little better.
The specs of the machines are as follows.
Now the 1156 machine should do decently, but the low, low clock speed of the i5-750 is killing it big time at 2.66ghz. The C2Q can't even play on the lowest settings for more than 20-30 seconds without crashing.
My thoughts are to pick up a cheap i7-8XX chip for the 1156 machine and it should be good to go. The 470 can play on low/medium settings with no problem, and their respective hard drives can move to the rig they will use.
As far as a newer machine for my friend, I'm thinking something like this (sorry I can't link at work, newegg won't come up):
- AMD FX 6300 $119
- Gigabyte 970 AM3+ board $99
- NZXT Source 210 $45
- PNY GTX 580 that I will donate $free
- 8GB Crucial DDR3 $56
- 500 to 600W PSU $50
Does this seem like a reasonable machine? Or can it be done cheaper? I don't play BF4 but those seem to be pretty good specs.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Need to play BF4 fluidly, not talking max settings but decently at medium.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Not much, I will be helping but it needs to get done as cheaply as possible.
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
They live in Georgia, but the parts will probably be coming from me here in SoCal. Microcenter and Frys are both available to me.
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Listed below
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Listed below
6) Will you be overclocking?
Most likely not. They want plug-and-play.
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
Both 1080p
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
ASAP
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
Nothing in specific, just needs to run a BF4 machine
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Yes, 1 Windows 7 64-bit and one Windows 8 64-bit
