Hello everyone,
I am spec'ing a new system to mark my return from the land of aesthetically pleasing fruits, and I am building a machine that will be somewhat dual function, gaming and video and graphical work, but still somewhat cheap as far as price range goes. I know I will be making a lot of compromises along the way, but looking for a decent medium.

Because of the demands of AfterEffects use, I have decided to go to 12GB of memory, but the last time I built a computer was over 6 year ago and seemingly a lot has changed, and I feel more lost than a monkey in an elevator.

So with memory, if I am planning on a motherboard that specifies 'triple channel', am I better in getting 3x 4GB sticks or can i do 6x2GB (the mb has 6 slots...just want to make sure i am not missing something) Is one of these configurations better than the other? or will one severely handicap performance?

Any advice or recommendations are appreciated.

Considering how ridiculously expensive 4 GB modules still are, I'd just got with 6x2 GB. Performance-wise, if they are both comparative CAS latencies, they should be about the same.
 
Sounds like you need 12g, go with 3x4g chips....less volts/heat on memory controller versus running 6x2g.
 
I run 12GB in two of my machines and four others have 8GB.

The only reasons I would go 3x 4GB instead of 6x 2GB would be if:
1. I saw 24GB in this system as a somewhat near term possibility
2. I wanted to overclock (3 modules are easier on the IMC than 6)

Looks like 3x 4GB will be it. I found something else mentioning that running 6x sticks might not be the best idea, so those 4GB might be it

Also, I find it ironic (or appropiate?) that i type $GB by mistake first.
 
Actually - one more question: do i need PC1600 or will PC1333 do? I am getting an i7 920. If I do OC, it won't be that much, realistically what am I looking at as my ceiling with PC1333 memory?
