So how much gold do you need to equal the amount of content in that $10 pack? Because I see on HiRez you can get 1800 gold for $20 or 4000 gold for $30.
 
Im dling this game as we speak...Has anything changed since about a month ago? It seemed they had very few maps & the maps they did have were kind of boring..What is the fastest way besides paying to earn upgrades?
 
Play the game... I haven't spent a dime and am at rank 25 with my main classes 50-80% unlocked. Takes a while to save up for the 100,000xp weapons, but whatever. The cheap ones are just as effective.
 
Complicated question because I have all those things unlocked. I think if you totaled it all up it would be around 2500 gold, but no one would buy most of that with gold. For instance classes which they give you for free have terrible gold to xp ratios, so you should only unlock classes with xp. Reach is the only perk in there worth having. You used to be able to get the soldiers spinfusor for free and might still be able to do that, I have not checked. Technician is the cheapest class, and infiltrator is not particularly useful.

If you are a capper this is a good deal though because it gives you the LAR and thrust which are both great for pathfinder.

I think this deal is better than the $20 deal if you cap and in various situations but not all. Also my calulations would be for full price, most people now wait till they get a daily deal to buy stuff for less gold.
 
What's the deal with this "service" that supposedly installs and runs in the background I keep hearing about from other sites. I was hoping they wouldnt have this on the steam version but I heard otherwise.

Anyone have info on this?

Thanks for the reply. I've been thinking about getting into this game (played in the beta a bit) but I guess I was waiting to see if it was popular and what would be the best pack to get.

You also have to consider that they have daily deals variety....you can get pretty much anything discounted up to like 75% off of it's listed price. So I try to look at most bundles like this:

Take the listed price, cut it by 50%. If it's lower than the bundle pack price added up, then you're probably better off with waiting for daily deals. If the bundle is lower, showing a 50% or more discount...then the bundle is a pretty good deal.

I don't buy anything on daily deals unless it's at least 50% off and I usually shoot for 60% or higher on the stuff that I kinda want..

Anything under 20k XP I just buy with XP. I have bought 2 of the weapon packs, they aren't such a great deal in terms of % discount but didn't feel like waiting for the daily deals on them as I was really behind on weapons. Now Im comfortably caught up so it's not such a big deal to wait.

I think it's the anti-cheat, update and server monitor service. I haven't had any issues with it, and you can kill it when you don't want to play if it bugs you.

I haven't played really since release. I also downloaded it on Steam today (and dropped $10 for the Steam starter pack). I started fresh on a new account and played a solid 3 hours. I had a blast in CTF. The main difference I noticed is that you no longer need to spend gold/experience on upgrades which is awesome. You'll get upgrades just by using the gear. There's a few more maps in as well. Other than that it seems to play the same.
 
I haven't had time to play it much yet but I sprung for the $10 Steam pack as well.

EDIT: Played a bit tonight...really this is a pretty darn well-made game. It has a lot of the Tribes 2 feel to it.

It needs sum better maps...Along with a better engineer class...Does Renegades Mod ring a bell for anyone?? Lol oh the fun...Shields turrets cameras lasers mortar gun that can be controlled via control console in base protected, 4 seater flying transport that allows u to shoot freely.......ahh no game will ever rival Starseige Tribes...EVER PERIOD.

The skiing works really well. Is that new to the Tribes franchise?

Edit: Flying around these maps is intense!
 
Already had VIP but didn't have most of the shit in the Steam pack so I grabbed it. Now I wait for daily deals...

Also I love the way everything upgrades now. Just make sure you equip weapons and equipment that needs mastering for your first win of the day. Makes a world of difference.

Truly a great multiplayer experience, it looks like I have found a worthy BF successor.
 
I kinda suck but it's fun. Might be fun to get an [H] server going if it's possible, I've seen some private ones on there (I think?).
 
I loved Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 CTF but this game has some balance issues and map designs that make CTF feel different. I like team dm and capture and hold better in this game as it is suited better to these game types.
 
My only issue so far is with the random 20+ ranks in a match with mostly 2-7 ranks. Some games I won't see a rank higher than 8 (how it should be), and others it will be mostly 2-8s with maybe one or two ~20 ranks who just dominate the game. I doubt there are a shortage of ranks in the teens to play a match with, so wth are they doing in matches with noobs? :rolleyes:

Last night I was in a match and my team quickly went up 4-0 because of this in CTF. One the 5th capture, the guy just took the flag to some extremely high up location and just sat there with it for 20 minutes. Stupid shit like this ruins a game and makes others not want to play. I wasn't having any fun even though I was on the winning team. And why? Because we had three ~20 ranks on our team, and the rest of the match was a bunch of us noobs.

That is the one thing I don't get either. I get thrown into games with a ton of lvl 7-8s now since it came out on Steam, I'm lvl 26. Most the time there are just one or two of us in a game like that, I end up using a class I almost never use instead to try and make it a bit more fair, because when I play my preferred class (Jugg), I'll absolutely crush the other team and it just doesn't make it fun (outside of the first few times it happened lol)
 
Myself and a friend experienced the opposite problem. Once we hit level 8, we were getting thrown into matches of level 25+, with maybe another person around my level. I had the same thought that there can't be a shortage of particular level ranges, and I wondered if it's a way to get people to shell out money for weapons and belt items that do higher damage or provide more defense.

It seems to have gotten better now, though, and we're getting matches with mid-teen to low twenty levels with the odd 30+. Other people play with their friends, and certainly some will be significantly higher in leveled, but of course a couple of you have disproved that that's always why.

Maybe the matchmaking/finding service is just a little funky.
 
Ranks don't really matter too much in the game once you get to the high teens. It is an indicator of who has played more then anything else. Just like in game score/kills don't mean squat as long as your team wins (at least with CTF).

Though, at the same time, playing with and against higher ranks is good because you can pick up some stuff from them on how to play the class better or better spots/routes on a map.

As for items and shelling out money. Outside of a few classes that need a few things to perform their role optimally, all the default gear is fine and a lot of the stuff you can buy is an alternative way to play the class and the modified versions of the default weapons is mainly to reward people with better aiming so they can do more damage (and those weapons are cheap anyways).

There are the same handful of 20+ ranks that do that crap. They do it to high levels too, but they purposefully join low level games to troll because no one has the unlocks to kill them easily.

Or exploit cracks in maps and get down below where aren't SUPPOSED to be able to go. It's irritating as all hell and it's been around for months.

One of the guys name that does this crap consistently is Cod4life, dude is a troll. He has a buddy or two who help him do this crap, can't recall their names right now. But I've posted this in the hirez forums, with their names mentioned because I had referrals complaining about them and telling me they don't want to play the game if that's the crowd it has. 1-2 guys ruining match after match for 30+ other people is BS that shouldn't be tolerated, no matter what rank of people they do it too.

And they say "Well I should be able to play the game how I want"......when their are modes that let them pick up a flag and run around like a doofus and no one will complain. BS excuse for trolls HiRez is not handling effectively, and their forums are full of people who support trollish behavior and conduct themselves like trolls. If you can ignore it, do it. If you can't, it'll quickly make you not enjoy the game nearly as much knowing they do nothing to curb this stuff and have a rabid base of players who promote it on their forums. Normal players rarely post there because it's just people telling you to shut up more or less.


Try using /report <name> <offense> in the console to report them. This has had no appreciable effect for me, but maybe if more people complain via that instead of being shouted down on the forums they make have to take notice. And /mute <name> to ignore the voice comm spammers. They aren't as bad as they were, but some people still spam all round long with the same 2-3 commands like they are getting paid to do it.
 
yeah, so far higher ranks haven't been too receptive of the recent influx of players coming from Steam which is extremely farsighted on their part. a lot of snarky comments made during gameplay and 20+ players trolling lower levels...

since I started playing on Tuesday I've seen maybe 2-3 full servers, that's it. if the community continues to absorb itself in all this self-entitlement I don't see that much of a longtime future for Tribes:Ascend. that being said I still love the game as I've been looking for a BF3 replacement, time will tell...
 
I can't believe all this crying about ranks and unlocks being the reason you get your ass kicked. If you think you will be able to compete with the unlocks, then support the devs and go buy them.... Rank pretty much just equals time played. Those same people that kick the shit out of you now at rank 25+ could reroll a noob with no unlocks and would still kick the shit out of you. This game is very very skill based, so unlocks aren't going to help you, just time/practice.

As for the high levels in low level games. The only time I was able to do this, is when I got my buddies to start playing and joined their matches. When I would look at the player list, I was the only high rank there. So of course I kept playing. I'm there to play with friends, not worry about noobs crying about being raped. Guess what, when I was a noob with no skill, I got my ass kicked as well. Just took some practice to get better.

Also, I have not bought a single item and I do just fine. I plan to hop in on the steam sale though, so I can at least support the devs some, but it is not needed to be competitive in the game.
 
I've actually been doing pretty well against heavies with lots of "bought" gear, just with a Soldier + Spinfuzor + Thumper. The key to this game is really to just KEEP MOVING. Plus I have a fair amount of Spinfuzor experience from previous games. :cool:

It seems like you don't really need a ton of gear to do well, though it would be fun to have more options. I'm waiting for better sales on gold items (lately it's been like 25-30% off, meh).

Yeah, that's kind of been the Tribes player mentality for a long time. I used to play Tribes quite a bit but I never got that snotty "everything else sucks, TRIBES 4 LYFE" attitude about it. The more players the better, I'd say, especially for a F2P, MP-only title. You gotta keep numbers up.
 
It can be hard to tell the difference between a weapon advantage and an experience advantage. But if some guy is playing rabbit with the flag you have to know what to do to take him down. You have 3 options all of them are cheap options as far as xp is concerned.

1. Go with pathfinder, pretty default all you need is the nitrons and a little skill. You just need to figure out how to get up to him then nitron the flag off him. This option is free since you get this class and loadout for free to start. This will work perfectly if he is camping somewhere high or pretty much anywhere but fail if he keeps moving at 300 around the map because you probably wont have the skill to catch him. If this fails try 3.

2. Get a shrike and run him over or shoot him. He cant stay anywhere up high if you do this. But you will need enough credits to buy one. The other thing is your shrike might not last long if the other team is protecting him. You will need to eject before they kill you unless you can afford the pilot perk.

3. Do what everyone every where does that stops cappers from running around the map or going up high. Get out the sentinel and shoot him. Even if your aim is bad eventually you are going to get him since his health does not regen, this works best if he is trying to run around the map to stay away from people. If he is camping in one spot he can hide from your shots.


Think of a troll as an oppertunity to force you to improve your skill and learn new tactics and the game will be more fun. I mean in most games a troll / camper could go sit in a room and shoot everyone as they come in the door.

This mentality exists in every game that produces elitism. Higher end MMO raiding guilds are like this as well. They have to justify their video game accomplishments in a way that belittles other people since they have low self-esteem. But it'll be especially bad in games that rely heavily on skill.

This is why guilds / clans / whatever group of gamers with "less skilled" players tend to be more friendly.
 
Yes which is exactly why he needs to learn how to counter rabbit / turtle tactics rather than complain.
 
I didn't say that skill automatically equals rank, rather it can be the other way around. People with higher ranks got there by playing more, thus having more experience. Ideally that means they've been able to improve techniques and learn the maps better. I've only been playing lightly for about a month now, and I still play and gain experience and get better, and I don't get as frustrated as when I was wholly new and being thrown into matches with people that had put significantly more time into it than I had.

When your team's flag isn't at base and/or you're being chased, yes, but I believe what's being referred to are players that troll and intentionally hold on to the flag and never cap.
