Looking to replace my dead Athlon X2 250 system.

1) What will you be doing with this PC?
Streaming for LAN and Web, transcoding.

2) What's your budget? $350

3) Which country do you live in? New York

CPU, Mobo, OS Drive, Memory

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing?
Antec case, 450watt Cooler Master, intel pci-e nic.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard?
USB, 6 SATA ports.

I live near a MicroCenter and the Athlon FX-4100 w/free mobo looks like it will do nicely.

Here is a list I just quickly put together from their weekend ad:

undecided on motherboard.
 
Do you have a link for that free mobo deal? Or is some after rebate crap?

EDIT: NVM I see it now. Go for the Asus M5A88-V Evo.

yes, i do need onboard video. would like to free up the pcie slots for network and other functions in the future.
 
Well the problem is that the Promo code is actually confusing judging from this thread:

Not sure what motherboard actually qualifies for that $120 off. Should probably check with your local MC how exactly that promo is working at that MC.

To help you narrow down what motherbaords to get:
- Avoid any AMD mobo using the AMD 870, 890X, 890FX, 970, 990X, or 990FX chipsets as none of those chipsets have onboard video.
- Try to stick with socket AM3+ mobos in order to have a higher chance of compatibility with that AMD CPU and the motherboard
- You're basically looking at the 760G and 880G chipsets for socket AM3+ mobos if you want onboard video.
- Avoid AsRock as they only have a one-year warranty on their motherboards.
- Avoid the Asus 760G mobos as the reviews for those mobos are less than good.

thanks danny, really good info.

am i losing out on any performance by avoiding the 8xx and 9xx series chipsets? my mind says their numbers are higher than 7xx therefor must be better in some regard?

IIRC, there is indeed a performance difference between the 7xx and 8xxx series chipsets as well as better SATA support. However there is little performance difference between the 8xx and 9xxx series chipsets.
