should i get one?
be serious now and don't laugh:D
i want the best possible control, precision, aiming
i know they are hard to learn, but how do they compare with a good mouse?
one observation is that one would never have to reset the physical position(when you have to lift the mouse up and center it back on the mouse pad)

i like to play first/third person shooters
looking at the logitech cordless trackman optical

thx all

i've used the trackman marble for years now (thumb trackball)..

i love it and just never will go back to a regular mouse..

i remember when i first got it though (many many years ago) it took about a week to get used to.. but after a while it just becomes second nature..

i had the wireless marble for a while and just didn't care for it (but then again, i'm not a big fan of the wirless mouse/keyboards)..

personally i would go for the corded version..

It's really kind of a personal preference - some people swear by them. The only real way to tell if it's for you is to pick one up and spend some time with it.

I use the index finger trackball (logitech marble mouse)

They work great.

But its a matter of preference, I like the added lack of wrist strain by using one (only move fingers, not wrist).

Have been using the Logitech Trackman Wheel (thumb ball) for nearly 2 years.. It works great for me in games.. Try one and see if it works for you...

I've used this mouse(logitech mouseman) since like 1996 i think up until like 2003. Regreased/recleaned all the time and works like new even till this day lol. I might even switch back soon. The clickers on the new mouses i've been using lately have been going out compared to the older mouses some reason :)

those things are really hard for me to use. Everytime I see a person use one of those trackballs, I envy them for mastering that complex contraption.

I learned to play CS on one years ago, but it eventually crapped out. They don't seem to be terribly common and I just started using a regular mouse again, haven't gone back.

I used this one for years till it finally crapped out on me:

Too bad they don't make it anymore. I really like how you don't have to pick it up.

I use the same MS Trackball and people still don't beleive I game with it. Oh, and I totally agree with the not having to pick it up. I hear people slamming their mice down alot durring gaming sessions with lots of competition, meanwhilst I just spin that red orb around blissfully. I'm on my second one now, I had to get it new off of e-bay.

Interesting device, I've tried using one and it was hard to get to grips with. In all honestly I think with enough practice you could get as good with one as a mouse but I see no inherent benefit to it's design compared a mouse which would add greater precision or accuracy and so have never really been bothered enough to give it a try.

I used to use a Logitech Trackman Vista. It was perfect for gaming and very comfortable. I rocked on the old Unreal Tournament thanks in part to that trackball. I wore out two off them over the years I played that game.

They don't make any trackball like that one anymore. Every one I've tried since then isn't really made for gaming.

I'm starting to think this will be my next mouse/trackball: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/trackballs/devices/189&cl=ca,en
They are really good when you have limited space, like I do at work. I don't really need it to be cordless, but it's the only one that I've seen that is really configured the way I like them, meaning you use your fingertips instead of thumb. I can't use the thumb ones in games, it's too awkward.

Up until about 2 months ago I had exclusively used a Trackman Wheel for about the last decade. I had gotten pretty proficient using it for gaming, having gone through pretty much every major FPS since the original Team Fortress.

About 2 months ago CompUSA had G5's on sale for ~$30 so I picked one up since I was curious. After the initial learning curve (which wasn't that bad since I use a standard mouse at work) I found the G5 to be a much better solution for gaming for me. Motion in FPS was much smoother and more intuative, and it seemed easier to play on the higher sensitivity levels. I also liked the way the G5 allowed me to draw a smooth line on a target during sniping; this was something I wasn't able to do effectively with the trackball, since I had to constantly re-adjust my thumb.

Ultimately, I'd recommend trying out the trackball to see how you like it, but for me, I now prefer a nice quality conventional mouse for standard use, and especially for gaming.

I've been using a Logitech Trackman Marble Plus for 9 years now. Windows calls it a USB Logitech Trackman Wheel. I never had plans to go to a mouse. Until..... I had a clients machine in the shop 2 weeks ago and he brought his G5 Laser in... Oh my God. That is one sexy, good feeling mouse. It feels like it was custom designed for a hand. If I do get rid of my trackball it will be for the new 2 button G5.

That's the exact trackball I used for so long, and pretty much my exact reaction to the G5. I still have much love for the trackball, but that damn G5 was just so smooth and precise.
