I'm having a tough time figuring out which chip to get...could someone give me some advice?

NewEgg has the E6600 at $222
and the E6850 at $329 (but I know I can beat that)

Is it worth the extra Benjamin?

Crucial (DDR2 PC2-6400 • 4-4-4-12 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 2.2V


I've never overclocked, but would like to learn and push my numbers a bit....nothing extreme.

Will also have a 8800GTX/24"LCD/RAID

Will use mainly for gaming and ripping/burning....

Hmmm...seems like the E6750 might be the sweet spot between price and performance...


Why would someone buy a E6600. when the E6750 is a better performer at a cheaper price?
 
Maybe the E6600 has a better OC?

I heard however that some of the newer E6600 have worse OC than the earlier ones? Is that truth?

I think the E6750 is a good OC CPU as well already read 3,92GHz....amazing.

The E6600 can't get to this level under these circumstances (aircooling).

Only with special cooling the E6600 can get close to the 4 GHz.

i haven't run an overclock yet but my stock e6850 is running <35C on both cores fully loaded in orthos and the max temp, according to intel, is 72C. i figure i should be able able to get a pretty good overclock, and this is on air.
 
I second the choice of the E6750. They can be had for under $210 from various retailers.

If you only look at the CPU I would say go for the Q.

But I havn't looked into the rest of the config yet.

So if you consider the mobo Ram expenses where do you end?

Multiplier max. differences:

X6800 - unlocked (12 or even higher 11 is standard)
Q6600 - 9 (cause it's in fact 2x E6600)
E6850 - 9
E6750 - 8
E6700 - 10
E6600 - 9
