Are all Toshiba hard drives just rebranded HGST (Hitachi) drives or does Toshiba make some of their own and rebrand others?

Are Samsung drives Samsung or are those rebranded as well?

samsung are now seagate drives

toshiba are toshiba drives

hgst is now WD

I know that hgst drives are still in development and production but not sure about samsung. I would say (by not seeing any new products for several years now) that all development has ceased on samsung hard drives after the Seagate purchase. Are samsung hard drives even being produced?

Toshiba are really more Toshiba-HGST where the larger 3.5-inchers are concerned. Built with the tech and specs from HGST, on an HGST fab acquired in the WD buyout.

Does anyone know if 4TB+ Toshiba hard drives any good?

Yes. For all intents and purposes they're equivalent to HGST drives. Even the externals have 3yr warranties. I've been buying tons of them. I just wish they made a CoolSpin (5x00RPM) variant.

Actually Toshiba has a plant in the Philippines which produce them. They got HGST 3TB and lower tech from WD which improved their own process as they were having trouble with 1TB drives. Many of the technology used in disk drives were developed by Toshiba but implementing them for mass production at lower cost is a different beast. The 4TB and higher drives are not produced by HGST in china but by Toshiba itself in the Philippines. As IBM developed many hard drive features but they had the worst drives and the best ones depending on how good they were at implementing those developments. China wont let WD close down HGST which might be the only reason they are still making drives. As samsung seems to be gone but they still make certain models but looks like nothing new. Toshiba does make 2.5 drives where they still lead the pack. So I think cost is where Toshiba has trouble and not so good as seagate at using cheaper components. In any case HGST and Toshiba both have higher reliability than the rest unless you happen to buy into models they were testing below part components. They might have learnt their lesson from the fiasco with the 2TB drives and OCZ's experience..
